The Alpha Princess They Destroyed Chapter 04
Luke Hart lifted a brow, his greasy, disgusting gaze slidingÂ
over my body.Â
“Well, look at that,” he drawled. “If it isn’t Ember. You’ve changed so much I almost didn’t recognize you.”Â
Something inside my head snapped.Â
Every thread of reason I had left, every scrap of control I had been forcing myself to keep, was shredded to nothing.Â
“Why are you here?” I screamed.Â
I lunged forward like a lunatic, grabbed an ashtray, and hurledÂ
it at him with all my strength.Â
“Get out! Get out!”Â
The ashtray smashed into Luke’s forehead, and blood spilledÂ
down his face at once.Â
“You’re insane!” he barked, instinctively starting toward meÂ
like he meant to beat me the way he used to.Â
Then he saw the man on the sofa, brows furrowed, and heldÂ
himself back.Â
My eyes were bloodshot.Â
After a night of nightmares, the nightmare was now standing in front of me, alive and breathing.Â
I bolted into the kitchen and grabbed a knife. “I’m going to kill you!”Â
The man on the sofa moved.Â
Then came a sharp crack.Â
Everything stopped.Â
A burst of wind hit the side of my face, and an instant later, myÂ
cheek exploded with pain.Â
I crashed to the floor, tears of despair flooding my eyes.Â
“Get ahold of yourself!” Liam lowered the hand he’d justÂ
struck me with, his face full of disgust and irritation.Â
“Zoe invited them. After all, your being obedient now isÂ
thanks to them. I think she made a fair point.”Â
“They’ll be attending her welcome ceremony too. Stop makingÂ
a scene.”Â
All the strength seemed to drain out of me.Â
I looked at the man I had once loved most in the world, and aÂ
broken rasp tore from my throat.Â
“Why… Why are you doing this to me? Liam… just kill me.”Â
His pupils shrank violently. “What did you just say?”Â
I coughed up a mouthful of black blood.Â
As he stared at me with trembling eyes, I blacked out.Â
When I woke again, I was in the Pack hospital.Â
He sat by my bed with his eyes lowered, motionless, as thoughÂ
he had been thinking about something for a long time.Â
The moment he saw I was awake, he stood and came over.Â
“Does anything still hurt? I arranged a full body exam.”Â
I looked away. “No need. I know my own body. It’s nothingÂ
serious.”Â
He hesitated. “If you really can’t stand those men, I’ll send them away.”Â
Under the blanket, my fingers curled tight.Â
had just opened my mouth when Zoe walked in.Â
She glanced at me, hiding the malice in her eyes, then turnedÂ
to him and slipped into a spoiled tone.Â
“Liam, I kind of like them. They’re refreshingly honest. Let them stay for my welcome ceremony, okay?”Â
“But…” He looked at me.Â
Zoe let go of him and tears spilled instantly from her eyes.Â
“I knew it,” she cried. “The second Ember came back, you stopped loving me! In this house, I’m the extra one! If that’sÂ
the case, I’ll leave!”Â
Of course she never made it to the door.Â
Because Liam who had felt a flicker of guilt toward me just moments earlier forgot all of it the second he saw her cry.Â
He turned fully to her and hurried to comfort her.Â
“Fine, fine. Whatever you want. They can stay.”Â
Zoe blinked through her tears. “I want them staying in theÂ
estate too.”Â
He nodded without hesitation. “All right. Whatever you say.”Â
My chest clenched so hard that a sharp pain twisted through it, making me frown.Â
Then his phone rang, and he left in a hurry.Â
The room fell quiet, leaving only Zoe and me.Â
She didn’t bother hiding her true face anymore.Â
She laughed, delighted with herself. “See? You’ll never takeÂ
anything from me. Not him, not your old friends, not even theÂ
servants in the Alpha estate.”Â
“As long as I ask, he would even send you back to those menÂ
again.”Â
She stepped closer and pinched my chin.Â
“Just like before. That kidnapping? I staged the whole thingÂ
myself. And he believed me without the slightest doubt.”Â
I stared at her.Â
When I spoke, my voice came out low and dangerous,Â
overlapped by the voice of the wolf inside me that had longÂ
been buried.Â
“It was you? You planned all of it?”Â
“Yep.” She smiled, smug and bright. “Go ahead. Tell him theÂ
truth. See if he believes you.”Â
Murderous hatred surged through me.Â
Everything from those five years came rushing back, black andÂ
endless.Â
“Zoe,” I said, every word soaked in venom, “I will kill you.”Â
She gave a disdainful laugh. “I’m terrified.”Â
Then she turned and walked out.
