But instead of being satisfied, he froze. 

Something in him seemed strangely unsettled. 

“You have nothing to say?” he asked, “You’re just admitting it? What if I was wrong about you?” 

I gave a soft laugh. “There’s no point. Someone who doesn’t believe me never will,” 

His lips pressed into a thin line, and his face darkened. 

The moment I turned away, I saw that the orange tree I had planted by hand in the front yard as a child had been ripped up 

by the roots. 

In its place was a bed of roses, Zoe’s favorite. 

Liam frowned and glanced at me instinctively. 

“Zoe is allergic to citrus,” he said. “If you can’t let it go, I can 

have it replanted in the backyard.” 

I stopped walking. 

In my mind, I heard his voice from years ago, back when we 

planted it together. 

“The sapling and my favorite little sister can grow up side by side. Let’s see whether the tree or Ember ends up taller.” 

The memory shattered. 

I spoke without emotion, “No need. If it’s gone, it’s gone.

“You, of all people, need to be there. You’re the one who took her place. If you don’t show up, people will talk about her.” 

Three days from now… 

I curved my lips. “Sorry. I probably won’t be able to make it.” 

Because by then, I would already be in the Judgment Realm. 

The truth was, I was a descendant of the Moon Goddess. 

Long ago, I had made a deal with a spirit called the system. 

If my soul survived inside this body for twenty–five years, I would be granted the Moon Goddess’s power and immense 

wealth. 

The moment he heard me say that, Liam’s expression turned 

even darker. 

He grabbed my wrist hard enough that I could hear the bones grind out of place. 

“I’m not discussing this with you,” he said. “Unless you 

haven’t learned enough yet.” 

Pain drained the color from my face. 

I bit down hard enough to keep myself from groaning. 

Then, with a violent shove, he released me and looked down at 

me like a judge delivering sentence. 

“If you don’t appear in three days, I’ll make sure you regret 

it.” 

I fell to the floor. 

My wrist, already no more than skin over bone, bent at an 

unnatural angle. 

I looked at his cold retreating back, and my eyes burned. 

When I made it upstairs, I pushed open the bedroom door from memory, then stopped dead. 

Everything inside had changed, with photos of Zoe everywhere 

I looked. 

She happened to walk by just then and saw me standing there. 

“Sorry, Ember,” she said sweetly. “This room became mine 

five years ago.” 

“You’ll have to take one of the guest rooms. Or maybe a maid’s 

room.” 

I pressed my lips together, offered no protest, and turned to 

go downstairs. 

That only made Zoe angrier. 

It was like hitting a wall. 

She had won in every possible way, yet somehow still felt suffocated by it. 

What she wanted was to see me scream, fight, and beg, not stand there like this lifeless shell. 

As she watched me leave, cruelty flashed through her eyes. 

Then she pulled out her phone and made a call. 

I chose a random guest room, stepped beneath the shower, 

and took my first bath in five years. 

When the hot water hit me, I flinched so hard I nearly 

stumbled. 

My body had forgotten what warmth felt like. 

I reached up and slowly wiped the steam from the mirror. 

The woman staring back at me was covered in wounds and 

scars. 

Old whip marks and burns had barely faded before newer, 

uglier scars had layered over them. 

That night, I slept badly. 

My dreams were full of hands, laughter, violation, pain. 

All I could hear were the filthy voices of the bastards who had 

tormented me. 

I didn’t wake until dawn, drenched in sweat. 

“Thank Alpha and the Alpha princess. We only did what was expected of us.” 

My whole body went rigid. 

I whipped toward the door. 

My blood froze in an instant, and my body started trembling 

uncontrollably. 

I would never forget that voice for as long 

as I existed. 

I ran out like a madwoman. 

And there in the middle of the living room stood the monsters 

who had destroyed me, fawning over Zoe and Liam like 

obedient lapdogs.
