She Rejected the Alpha and Became Her Own Moon Chapter 04
I called a rideshare and headed straight for the airport.
As my luck would have it, my flight was delayed, pushed from ten in the morning to two in the afternoon.
While I waited, bored out of my mind, I suddenly heard my parents’ familiar laughter.
I followed the sound and saw my mother tugging Iris and Ethan along, showing them off to the travelers next to her.
“Iris is brilliant and gorgeous both. She’s a very famous ballet dancer, you know.”
“This is her husband, Ethan. He’s going all the way to the West Coast with Iris for her treatment, and once her leg’s healed and they’re back, they’ll hold the wedding.”
“Ethan, I’m trusting you with Iris.”
Ethan wore a dark gray coat and stood tall, his eyes fixed on Iris the whole time as he answered gently.
The four of them made such a warm little family picture that it made my eyes ache.
I turned on my heel to slip away from them, but Ethan caught it at once. He knew my scent far too well, and anytime I came near him, he could pick it out.
“Aurora, what are you doing here?”
At his words, my parents’ laughter cut off in an instant, and they all swung around to look at me, each face uglier than the last.
My mother reached me first. “Aurora, what did you come running here for? You said you were moving away, leaving, and the second you heard Ethan was going, you chased right after him?”
My head throbbed. My flight was just delayed. I hadn’t come to chase after Ethan.
Ethan’s brow creased. “Aurora, your sister needs to stay in good spirits for her treatment, and it isn’t right for you to tag along. Be good and go on back.”
That soft tone at the end was the one he always used to coax me.
Even though we’d broken the bond, his habits of casual tenderness hadn’t changed at all.
Under everyone’s strange stares, I kept my face blank and held up my ticket.
“Sorry, but we’re on different flights. See for yourselves if you don’t believe me.”
What I hadn’t expected was that the ticket only made it worse.
The instant I mentioned it, my mother’s face went dark, she snatched the ticket out of my hand, and she tore it to shreds without even looking at it.
My father grabbed my carry-on with one hand, gripped my arm with the other, and dragged me bodily out of the gate area.
“Get the hell away from here!”
My mother followed behind, screaming at me hysterically.
“How did I give birth to something as shameless as you?”
“Don’t think nobody knows why you came chasing here.”
“You’re trying to get your claws into your sister’s man.”
“As long as your father and I are alive, don’t even dream of it!”
In front of the whole crowd, countless eyes landed on me, and I shook with anger as the blood rushed to my head.
But my parents cursed me out and turned to leave, giving me no room to defend myself at all.
I stood there with my face burning hot and my fingertips trembling.
Just then, Ethan came out of the gate area, bent down, and picked up my carry-on.
He set the case in front of me, a trace of weariness in his face. “Aurora, stop this.”
He reached up and ruffled the top of my hair, his voice meant to soothe.
“Once your sister’s leg heals and she can dance again, once she doesn’t lean on me anymore, she’ll go chase her stage on her own.”
“She’s always loved her freedom. She won’t actually bond with me, and when that time comes, you and I will bond again.”
He said all of it like it was the natural order of things, in a tone of charity, as if he were granting me some enormous favor.
I nearly laughed out loud in fury.
I stared straight at him and spelled it out one word at a time.
“Did you not just hear how my parents cursed me?”
“Now you listen to me carefully. I will never bond with you again, not in this lifetime.”
“I, Aurora Hart, reject you, Ethan Blackwood, as my mate. Forever.”
