Ethan pointed at Tom and lied through his teeth.
“He’s solid and dependable, an honored warrior of the Pack, and your sister says he’s more than good enough for you.”
As he spoke, he patted my head to soothe me.
“Of course, I know you won’t fall for anyone else. This is all just for show.”
“Your sister was afraid your wolf would break down over losing me, so she found you a new mate.”
“Don’t throw her kindness back at her. Knowing he’ll look after you sets my mind at ease.”
I turned and stared at him, and the sheer entitlement on his face made me laugh out of pure anger.
He was in such a hurry to hand me off to someone else, and he’d picked this half-hearted option to do it.
I’d fallen for him at first sight once, at the Pack’s annual honors gala.
He’d stood on the stage in formal dress, his back straight as a pine, like a shaft of light dropped into the crowd.
Even though he was my sister’s fated mate, even though it was a forbidden, one-sided crush, my heart still stirred the instant I saw him.
But looking at him now, not a single ripple stirred in me.
Alpha Ethan Blackwood was nothing more than an ordinary man after all.
He was about to bond with my sister, and still, he wanted to keep his hold on me, probably out of a werewolf’s raw possessiveness.
He’d arranged an unremarkable mate for me to make sure I wouldn’t fall for anyone else while he was away.
I looked at him coldly, every word laced with scorn.
“Years ago, when Iris wouldn’t bond with you, the two of you forced me to bond with you instead.”
“Now that Iris wants you back, the two of you are forcing me to bond with someone else.”
“One word from Iris and my whole life gets rearranged. In your eyes, am I just some thing you can toss around whenever you please?”
I didn’t wait for an answer. I grabbed my case and turned to leave.
I walked toward the main road with my anger bottled up, and the moment I rounded the corner, his car caught up and cut across my path.
There was no sign of the other man in it anymore.
He wore a slightly guilty look, and for once, he gentled his voice to win me over.
“Relax. If you don’t want to bond with anyone, no one will dare force you.”
I ignored him and kept walking on my own.
He rolled the car slowly alongside me and asked again,
“Aurora, where are you even going? Why not come back to your parents’ place with me?”
“Smooth things over with them, live at home from now on. I don’t like the idea of you out there on your own.”
I finally stopped and looked at him calmly.
“No need. I’m leaving this city. You just take good care of Iris.”
His face changed all at once, and he slammed on the brakes, the tires scraping the ground with a harsh screech.
“Aurora, I’ve told you over and over, telling your sister I’d bond with her is only to keep her calm. Why do you have to keep picking at it?”
The words had barely left him when his phone rang.
He glanced down at the screen and immediately started the car again.
Before he pulled off, he shot me a hurried glance and tossed out,
“I have to go pack. Your sister and I fly to the West Coast this afternoon.”
“If anything comes up, reach my Beta. I’ll message you once I land. Just answer when I do. You don’t need to come out.”
I stood where I was and watched the car shrink into the distance, and strangely, a deep calm settled over me.
I truly couldn’t understand it. I’d let go and cleared the way for him and Iris, so why wouldn’t he let me leave?
Did watching me watch the two of them play happily somehow make him feel better about himself?
But I wasn’t that far gone. The best ending for us was never to lay eyes on each other again.
