She Rejected the Alpha and Became Her Own Moon Chapter 05
The moment my words landed, the Alpha’s face.Â
twisted in pain, and he slowly clutched his chestÂ
and buckled to one knee on the ground.Â
I startled back a step, but he caught my hand atÂ
once.Â
His voice shook, and without meaning to, he letÂ
the weight of an Alpha command bleed into it.Â
“Take it back. Now!”Â
The pressure of it pinned me in place so I couldn’tÂ
move.Â
He seemed to recover as well, and he stood andÂ
pulled me into his arms.Â
“Don’t do this, and don’t ever say that again. For aÂ
second there I thought it would kill me.”Â
The feelings I had left called out to me.Â
Against my own will, I wanted to hold him back.Â
He might not be mine as a fated mate, but theÂ
Moon Goddess had recognized me as his second mate and granted us a sacred, unbreakable bond.Â
He coaxed me in a flustered voice. “As long as itÂ
doesn’t get in the way of her treatment, I’ll agree toÂ
any terms you want.”Â
It was the final blow.Â
I drew my hand back.Â
Even when he was making me a promise, he putÂ
Iris first.Â
I’d already gone numb, and I tugged the corner ofÂ
my mouth into a smile. “I don’t want anything.”Â
What I wanted was my freedom.Â
From here on, I would run my own life, and no oneÂ
would push me around.Â
None of it had anything to do with him anymore.Â
I didn’t need him to hand me my freedom asÂ
charity.Â
He looked like he still wanted to say something,Â
but the announcement started calling West CoastÂ
passengers to board.Â
Iris waved and called to him from a short way off,Â
and he answered her without hesitation.Â
Before he went, though, he squeezed my hand oneÂ
more time. “Once your sister’s better, we’ll sitÂ
down and talk this through properly.”Â
I pulled my hand free and said nothing.Â
There had been nothing left to talk throughÂ
between us for a long time.Â
By the time his back disappeared for good at theÂ
far end of the gate, my delayed flight had finallyÂ
started boarding.Â
We each turned away, and from that day on, weÂ
never had to meet again.Â
*****Â
The plane cut through the thick clouds andÂ
touched down at the airport in Florida, a fineÂ
drizzle drifting past the window.Â
I stepped out of the terminal with my singleÂ
carry–on, and a warm, damp breeze rolled over me,Â
thick with the scent of fresh greenery, rich earth,Â
and the faint trace of gardenias drifting fromÂ
somewhere far away.Â
It was nothing like the dry, biting, pine–scentedÂ
wind back north.Â
I drew a deep breath, and for the first time in whatÂ
felt like forever, the tight knot in my chestÂ
loosened just a little.Â
I hadn’t told anyone where I was going.Â
Before boarding, I’d switched to a new phone.Â
number and deleted every contact connected toÂ
the Pack, my family, and Ethan from my socialÂ
accounts.Â
For the first eighteen years of my life, I’d lived inÂ
Iris’s shadow.Â
I wore her hand–me–downs, listened to my parents tell me over and over that I should be more like Iris,Â
and gave up the things I loved because Iris alwaysÂ
got them first.Â
The next five years were spent trapped in the PackÂ
apartments, with my entire world revolving around.Â
Ethan.Â
His preferences became the rules I lived by, andÂ
“Luna” became the only identity I had left.Â
This time, I only wanted to be Aurora.Â
Just Aurora Hart.Â
Before coming here, I’d searched online for places.Â
to rent.Â
After an hour–long train ride into the old district, IÂ
found a small ground–floor house tucked away onÂ
a quiet street in the heart of St. Augustine’sÂ
historic neighborhood.Â
The house was old, with white walls stained byÂ
creeping moss.Â
The front door opened onto a tiny yard where aÂ
cluster of hydrangeas the previous tenant had planted still drooped quietly in one corner.Â
My landlady was a kind elderly woman.Â
When she saw me arrive alone with nothing but aÂ
suitcase, she lowered the rent by two hundredÂ
dollars without hesitation and even left me aÂ
basket of oranges picked from her own backyard.
