Ethan drove me to the foot of the Pack apartments in that black SUV.
Any pack member who’d served the Pack and didn’t have a place of their own could stay here for a while. It was one of the Pack’s benefits.
Ethan and I had once lived here, too, for five years.
Back then, our house was still being built, and since the Pack apartments sat close to the packhouse, he’d asked me to make do and stay here with him in the meantime.
“I’ve already had the Beta assign you the big flat we used to live in. You can live here from now on.”
I stood at the entrance and looked up at the top floor.
Ethan and I had lived there five years, and he used to kiss me and say, “Sorry to make you rough it. One day I’ll give you a big estate to live in.”
I never understood what was so rough about the flat, especially since I had him there with me.
Then, right as our estate was finished, Iris came back.
Her timing was so perfect, as if she’d waited for the fruit to ripen and returned just in time to steal it.
I looked up at the flat on the top floor.
I’d built the flower trellis on that balcony with my own hands, and from there I could always spot his car the moment it arrived.
But every time he hurried in through the door without so much as a glance up.
I’d wiped the steamer in the closet until it shone every single day, all so his shirts and coats would always hang crisp and neat.
Even the whole wall of the wardrobe I’d stocked piece by piece, his work clothes, his casual clothes, his ties, his watches, all the little daily odds and ends, every one chosen to his taste.
Everywhere here held my hard work, and yet almost nothing in it belonged to me.
Packing up all my personal things took me only five minutes, and even stuffed full, it came to a single carry-on.
I called Pack logistics and put in a request to give up the flat.
As for Ethan’s things inside, they could go to his big estate, and I was sure my sister would sort them out for him.
I only wanted to leave fast, so I said it plainly over the phone.
“I’m giving up this flat right away. It’s fine if the payout comes out a little short.”
Our Pack looked after its own fairly well, and if you gave up your right to a unit, Pack finance paid out a matching sum.
The truth was that Ethan was a very good Alpha.
He just wasn’t a good mate.
Or rather, he was a good mate to Iris, not to me.
The words had barely left me when someone seized my wrist hard, and Ethan’s voice came from above me, cold enough to splinter into ice.
“Why are you giving up the flat? If you let it go, where are you going to live?”
Hadn’t he driven off? How had he doubled back?
I frowned and tugged against his grip.
“It’s Pack housing, and we’ve already broken the bond. Why shouldn’t I be able to give it up?”
He wouldn’t let go. He went quiet for a few seconds, as if he’d finally landed on a reason.
“Why are you throwing a fit? I told you, breaking the bond is only temporary. Is this because I’m going to the West Coast with your sister for her treatment?”
He knit his brows and softened his voice to coax me.
“Your sister’s wolf is dormant, her leg won’t heal, and she’s unstable right now. I can’t have you making things harder.”
“Stop sulking. Even if you’re jealous, there’s a limit to it.”
A wave of helplessness washed over me. He hadn’t taken in a single word I’d said.
I couldn’t be bothered to waste more breath, so I shook his hand off and walked out with my carry-on.
I hadn’t expected that right at the apartment door, I’d run straight into a man in his early thirties with a slight limp in his right leg.
He saw me and launched right in. “You must be Aurora Hart. I’m Tom, the match they set you up with.”
My face fell. “What match?”
Ethan’s voice came right behind me.
“He’s the mate your sister and I found for you.”
