My Cruel Bestie Mocked Me to Please His Muse, Unaware I Was Flying to Harvard with a True Genius Chapter 03

I obediently got into the car.

Kevin Walker smiled at me.

“It’s rare that you actually need me. As soon as I got your message, I rushed right over.”

Kevin is the son of a friend of my dad’s. He got into Harvard University this year and is definitely a top student.

My mom always says I don’t have any friends, that I shouldn’t always be hanging around Zach, and that I should talk to Kevin more.

I used to refuse to listen, but now I want to make new friends too.

“Thanks for today.” I forced a smile. “Let’s do dinner tomorrow. My treat.”

Kevin wears gold-rimmed glasses, and his every gesture is graceful and refined.

“The pleasure is mine.”

By the time I got home, it was already ten p.m.

I took a shower, put on comfortable pajamas, listened to some music with my headphones, and got ready for bed.

When I picked up my phone, I saw sixtyone missed calls.

All from Zach.

Just as I was about to turn it off, another call came in, and I accidentally hit “Answer.”

“Sophie, where did you go?” Zach’s irritated voice came through.

“After I dropped Jasmine off, I came back to get you, but you were nowhere to be found. Didn’t I tell you to wait there? I drove around looking for you for a while, and when I got back, I asked your mom and found out you’d already gone home. Sophie, why are you so selfish? You came back on your own and didn’t even tell me?”

I listened calmly as he vented, and only spoke after he’d finished.

“I never asked you to come back for me. Besides, I told you right at the restaurant entrance that I was waiting for someone to pick me up. You’re the one who didn’t believe me.”

“Sophie, why are you talking to me like that? What the hell did I ever do to you?”

Zach was so furious he almost laughed.

“Why are you talking to me like that? Did something upset you at the class reunion? I said all that just for show. We’re close — I figured you wouldn’t mind.”

Right. Just say “we’re close, so you won’t mind.”

You could just ignore my feelings and make me suck it up.

When Jasmine got her period, just because we’re “close,” you made me take off my clean pants and give them to her.

When Jasmine’s phone died, just because we’re “close,” you made me give up my only power bank.

Once or twice, I put up with it.

But this time, I was done.

“I’m not mad. I’m going to bed. Good night.”

Before he could respond, I hung up.

I took a deep breath and told myself: Sophie, you did it.

From now on, letting go of him won’t be so hard.

Early the next morning, Zach’s car was parked outside my building.

“Sophie, we agreed to go camping today. You’re already half an hour late — how much longer are you going to dawdle?”

As I walked out carrying a box, Zach smiled knowingly.

“Didn’t you insist last night that you weren’t going camping? Then why are you here with that box?”

Just as I was about to speak, Jasmine’s voice came from the passenger seat.

“Sophie, hurry up and get in. We’ve been waiting for you forever.”

I froze and looked at Jasmine in surprise.

We’d agreed earlier that this camping trip would be just the two of us.

Zach explained nonchalantly, “Jasmine happens to be free today, so she agreed to come with us. More people, more fun anyway. Hurry up and get in. You’re the only one we’re waiting for.”

“I told you. I’m not going.”

I handed him the box. “Get out and take a look. Take all this stuff with you.”

Zach opened the car door and got out. His gaze swept coldly over the box.

“What’s this all about?”

“Here you go.” I tossed the cardboard box in front of him. “Everything you’ve ever given me is right here. Take a look for yourself.”

I opened the box. It was packed to the brim.

From mugs, dolls, and piggy banks to study notes, desk lamps, and bouquets of flowers — all of it.

Zach’s expression shifted. “What do you mean by this? Are you trying to cut me out of your life?”
