My Cruel Bestie Mocked Me to Please His Muse, Unaware I Was Flying to Harvard with a True Genius Chapter 04
I smiled. “Isn’t this what you’ve always wanted? You think I’m a pain in the neck. That I’m always clinging to you. But from now on, that won’t happen anymore.”
I cast a casual glance at Jasmine in the passenger seat. “You and your princess can now be together with no one in the way.”
Zach crossed his arms and stared at me for a moment, then suddenly laughed.
“So the annoying little tagalong finally got tired of following me around? If something that good actually happened, I’d be thanking my lucky stars.”
A burst of laughter rang out from all around.
I bit my lower lip and said nothing.
Everyone knew that Zach and I grew up together — I was always trailing behind him.
Some people envied how close we were.
But then the negative comments started piling up.
They said I was a shameless, clingy girl who’d been throwing herself at him since we were kids.
At first, I thought those were just baseless rumors, but then I heard Zach say it with my own ears.
“Sophie is the one who annoys me the most. She follows me around like a shadow every day — it’s driving me crazy. You think I’d marry her? Am I blind? If I could ever get rid of her, I’d wake up smiling even in my dreams.”
But now I didn’t want to be in the way anymore.
Zach had laughed his fill and pointed to the large box on the ground.
“Sophie, this is your last chance. Put those things away. I can pretend today never happened. You can still go camping with us, just like before.”
What a condescending tone — like he was doing me some huge favor.
But I didn’t want it anymore.
“No, thanks. Nobody wants to be a pest.”
Zach suddenly locked eyes with me. “Tell me again. Are you sure you don’t want these things?”
“I don’t want them.”
“Fine.” Zach let out a cold laugh, kicked the box viciously, then tossed it into the trash can. “Since it’s just useless junk, let’s get rid of it.”
He got into the car and slammed the door shut.
“It’s a rare chance to relax today. Let’s all go camping and not worry about that garbage.”
As if out of spite, Zach leaned over to fasten Jasmine’s seatbelt, their cheeks nearly touching.
He handed Jasmine the pillow that had always been mine. “Don’t you often get a stiff back? Here, use this.”
Jasmine shot me a smug look. “I don’t think that’s a good idea — it has Sophie’s name on it.”
Zach snorted. “It’s just trash we’re going to throw away anyway. Just use it for today and toss it.”
He glanced back at me, saw I still wasn’t reacting, and stepped on the gas.
I let out a sigh of relief, turned around, and texted Kevin.
“I promised to treat you to dinner today. What do you think of this place?”
We were eating at a restaurant in Boston when Kevin went to the restroom.
Suddenly, two familiar figures walked past the entrance.
When Jasmine saw me, she pointed and shouted sarcastically.
“Zach, look — isn’t that Sophie? That’s weird. Didn’t she say she wasn’t coming camping today? Yet here she is, secretly following us. What’s that about?”
I was taken aback — what a coincidence.
Their campsite was in the park right next to this restaurant.
Zach’s face was cold. He didn’t say a word to me.
He just put his arm around Jasmine’s waist. “Come on, we still need to buy water.”
Even though I’d already given up, seeing them look at me with such contempt still made my chest feel tight.
Could it be that Jasmine’s social media post from a few days ago was true? Were they actually dating?
I lost my appetite. I told Kevin I was going home first.
No sooner had I turned to leave than someone slapped me across the face.
I covered my cheek and looked over in disbelief.
Jasmine wore a smug, selfsatisfied expression.
“Sophie, stop clinging to Zach. Didn’t you hear how harshly he spoke to you? Don’t think I didn’t see you come in here with another man. Going after one guy after another — you’re really something.”
Seeing the venom on her face, I slapped her right back.
“Jasmine, that’s for earlier. Don’t ever show your face around me again, or I’ll hit you every time I see you.”
I turned and walked away.
But before I knew it, Jasmine had grabbed a glass and hurled it at me.
The moment it shattered on my hand, Jasmine let out a scream.
“Zach, how could Sophie be so cruel? She’s trying to ruin my face.”
The pain was sudden — I didn’t even have time to cry out.
Before I could look up, Zach, his face dark with rage, shoved me hard.
“Sophie, that’s going too far.”
