I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 09

Nora looked at me with genuine concern. “How did you go from just getting out of the hospital to Being admitted again? Are you okay? Where does it hurt? Is the baby okay? Did Ethan hurt you

again?”

Her barrage of questions left me torn between laughing and crying. I finally told her everything that

had happened, from beginning to end.

Nora nearly exploded.

“What? I’ve watched enough TV and read enough trashy novels, and I’ve never seen a plot this insane. How could someone be that shameless? You need to divorce him. You absolutely have to

divorce him!”

I watched Nora rant without stopping. After everything that had happened in the past twenty-four hours, it was only then that everything finally started to feel real.

“Nora,” I said quietly. “I think I want to keep the baby.”

She froze.

“Are you crazy? Don’t tell me you’re actually thinking about getting back together with that

bastard.”

I shook my head.

“It’s not because of him. At the hospital today, I saw the ultrasound. There was this tiny little shadow moving on the screen. And suddenly, I realized how hard this little baby was already fighting to stay alive.”

I lowered my gaze and rested a hand over my stomach.

“I don’t think I have the right to take that life away.”

Nora fell silent for a long time.

Finally, she let out a heavy sigh.

“Okay. If that’s what you’ve decided, I won’t try to talk you out of it. But you seriously need to stop

being so naive, Ethan may be infuriating, but that man has money. After everything he put you through, you’d better bleed him dry.”

I gave her a helpless smile.

“He already gave me ten million dollars.”

Nora let out a shriek.

“Holy crap! You took it, right?”

I nodded.

Only then did she visibly relax.

“Good! Why would you turn down money he offered you? And honestly, after everything you’ve suffered this past year, ten million isn’t nearly enough.”

For the next several days, Ethan practically lived outside my hospital room.

I should have been discharged the following day, but somehow, he kept finding reasons for me to stay until I had been there for an entire week.

Whenever the doctor came by, Ethan pulled out a notebook and wrote down every single thing the

doctor said.

If I turned over in my sleep in the middle of the night, he would immediately sit up and ask if I was

okay or needed anything.

I wasn’t heartless.

But the way Ethan had treated me that year was still painfully vivid.

So were all those days when I had swallowed his contempt and humiliation, and the nights I had waited outside grocery stores just to grab discounted bread before it expired.

Those memories hadn’t disappeared just because Ethan had suddenly changed.

The day I finally left the hospital, every piece of furniture in our home had been replaced.

And somehow, the house looked even better than it had before.

Ethan looked around and said, “I spent days researching everything online. I redesigned the house based on what you like. I also consulted experts before buying all the new furniture and appliances. None of them will pose any risk to the baby,”

The man who had once commanded entire boardrooms and made people tremble with a single look

now stood in front of me like a kid who had broken something precious and didn’t know how to fix

Nooked at hint calmly.

“Ethan, I haven’t forgiven you.”

His eyes dimmed for a moment.

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“I’ll wait.”

From that day on, Ethan came home on time every single night.

He bought groceries. He cooked. He cleaned. He did everything a devoted husband was supposed to

Meanwhile, the scandal involving Veronica continued to explode online.

Hayes Group also released an official statement.

Veronica was turned over to law enforcement on suspicion of embezzlement. All of her assets were

frozen. The money her parents and younger brother had siphoned from Hayes Group through her was also being recovered, and every last dollar would have to be repaid.

The internet dug into Veronica’s entire history.

Five years earlier, she had used almost the exact same scheme to extort a huge sum of money from

the CEO of another company.

For some reason, however, that CEO had let her off remarkably easily.

Apparently, this wasn’t Veronica’s first time.

I couldn’t be bothered to read the endless comments. I shut off my phone and focused on taking

care of myself and the baby,

Then, one afternoon, I received a call from an unfamiliar number.

A woman’s voice came through the phone.

“Is this Clara? I’m Victoria Hayes, Ethan’s mother.”

I froze.

Ethan’s mother?

I hadn’t even met her when Ethan and I got married. She had barely, contacted me since.

Victoria continued, “I heard you’re pregnant. Why didn’t you tell the family? I’ll have my driver pick you up. Come have dinner with me tonight.”

I hesitated before agreeing.

When I arrived at the private dining room, Victoria was already seated at the head of the table.

And sitting beside her was someone I never expected to see.

Brenda Thorne.

Veronica’s mother.
