I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 10
The moment Brenda saw me, she shot to her feet and rushed over.
She nearly dropped to her knees in front of me.
“Ms. Miller, please. I’m begging you. Please spare my daughter. She knows she was wrong. We’ll find a way to pay the money back. We’ll sell whatever we have if we have to. Just please, don’t let her
go to prison.”
I turned my head toward Victoria.
She was still smiling.
“Veronica was with Ethan for three years, after all. If she’s admitted that she was wrong and is willing to make things right, do you really have to take this all the way to court? It won’t exactly look good for the Hayes family if word gets out.”
And suddenly, I understood why Victoria had invited me to dinner.
She wasn’t here to meet her daughter-in-law.
She was here to beg me to save Veronica.
I gave her a cold smile.
“Then do you know what Veronica did to me for an entire year?”
Victoria’s smile faltered.
“If you don’t, you can ask your son.”
Brenda started crying beside us.
“My daughter made a terrible mistake. She wasn’t thinking clearly. She loved Mr. Hayes so much that she lost her judgment.”
I let out a cold laugh.
“So loving someone gives you the right to steal his money, destroy his wife, and then act like everything you did was justified?”
I took a slow breath before pushing myself to my feet.
“I am not dropping the charges. Whatever the court decides, that’s what will happen.”
I looked directly at Victoria.
“Mrs. Hayes, if you believe holding Veronica accountable is bad for the Hayes family’s reputation,
then I’ll divorce Ethan.”
Victoria’s face went deathly pale.
I didn’t wait for her response.
I picked up my purse and walked straight out of the private dining room.
The moment I stepped outside the restaurant, I saw Ethan’s car parked at the curb.
He was leaning against the driver’s door, waiting for me.
As soon as he saw me, he pushed himself upright and strode toward me.
“I already called my father,” he said. “If my mother keeps interfering in our marriage, I’m leaving Hayes Group. I’ll start my own company.”
He looked at me with absolute seriousness.
“You don’t have to worry. I won’t let anyone hurt you again. Ever.”
He hesitated, then continued.
“Can you trust me?”
I stared at him.
“I already had my attorney draw up a legal agreement and have it notarized. If I ever betray you again, everything I own goes to you.”
I looked at him, my mind a tangled mess of emotions.
When it came to forgiving Ethan, I knew one thing for certain.
It was going to take me a very, very long time.
