His Heart Stayed Flat for Me, Raced for Her, I Stayed for Neither Chapter 08
He sent her a message every single day after that.Â
On the first day of college, Caleb went straight to Westbrook University in Millbrook he thought Emily was attending.Â
He asked for Emily, but the security guard said there was no student by that name.Â
He didn’t believe it. He spent the entire afternoon going through the freshman roster, from the very first name to the very last.Â
Emily wasn’t there.Â
She had never enrolled at that school.Â
The September sun was still bright, but standingÂ
on that unfamiliar campus, Caleb felt nothing butÂ
cold.Â
He panicked.Â
He tried everything to find her.Â
He asked everyone who might know. He even swallowed his pride and begged his formerÂ
classmates for help.Â
Finally, a teacher told him.Â
Emily had gone abroad to study.Â
She hadn’t said a word. She just left him behind.Â
Because he couldn’t reach her, Caleb called herÂ
parents and begged them to let him talk to her.Â
All they said was, “Emily asked you to stop calling. She doesn’t want to see you.”Â
He didn’t give up. He called several more times.Â
Finally, her mother sighed and said, “Caleb, I’ve watched you grow up. I’ve always thought you were a good kid. But this time, you really broke herÂ
heart.”Â
“Emily is doing well here. Don’t worry about her. IfÂ
you really care about her, let her go.”Â
After he hung up, Caleb slid down against the wallÂ
and cried for the first time.Â
He had always gotten everything he wanted.Â
Good grades. Good looks. He was always theÂ
center of attention.Â
Everyone revolved around him, and he was used toÂ
- it.Â
Emily was no different.Â
When they were kids, she used to chase after him. When she fell down, she didn’t cry. She just got up and kept chasing him.Â
When she couldn’t keep up, she called for him toÂ
wait.Â
He always said he wouldn’t, but he always slowed down.Â
In high school, Emily used to sneak snacks intoÂ
his backpack. When he caught her, she would turn red and run away.Â
He knew she liked him even back then.Â
He always ate every single snack she gave him,Â
but he told her he gave them away.Â
Later, when they started dating, she always closedÂ
her eyes when he kissed her. She turned so red.Â
He was nervous too. His palms were sweaty. HisÂ
heart was racing.Â
He called himself an idiot for being so nervous,Â
then pretended to be cool as he held her hand andÂ
walked her home.Â
But somewhere in the past three years, he hadÂ
forgotten all of that. The nervousness. The wayÂ
his heart raced.Â
He got comfortable with her love. He enjoyed it,Â
but he also put her down in front of everyone.Â
Olivia was right. He was an asshole.Â
A strong wind blew past, as if carrying away all his pride and stubbornness.Â
Caleb finally understood. Emily had always been the only one for him.Â
University Library, Kensington University, LondonÂ
I sat in the library, letting the sun from the window wash over me. It felt warm.Â
I had been here for almost two months now.Â
Compared to the chaos of my first few weeks, I had mostly adjusted to the rhythm of life here.Â
When I first arrived, I couldn’t understand anything.Â
I couldn’t say anything.Â
Classes sounded like a foreign language. OrderingÂ
food in the cafeteria took five minutes of pointing.Â
I cried in my dorm room more than once. I felt likeÂ
I couldn’t do anything right. Like I had made aÂ
mistake coming here.Â
But slowly, things got better.
