After the beating, Leonardo rubbed Isabella’s sore hand for her. He spoke in a cold, warning tone.
“Keep your friend under control. If she keeps screaming wildly and intimidating my people again, the
punishment will be far worse.”
He took Isabella’s hand and turned to leave.
“Leonardo.” I called out to him and pulled out the divorce papers. “Let’s get divorced.”
He stared at me in disbelief. “You want a divorce?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
He stared at me for more than ten seconds, then let out a cold laugh.
“You secretly got rid of our child, and now you bring me divorce papers? Are you playing hard to get?”
“You’re overthinking this.”
Leonardo’s face turned gloomy. He snatched the papers from my hands, signed his name quickly, then flung
the documents hard at my face.
“Let me give you a piece of advice. Without me, you are nothing.”
“When you come crawling back to beg for forgiveness one day, I will never spare you a glance.”
Back at the clinic, Chiara treated my wounds while crying nonstop.
“How dare he lay a hand on you? If it weren’t for you, Leonardo would have been put behind bars long ago. How dare he bully you so arrogantly?”
“That bastard. I will get revenge for you. I’ll make him pay dearly.”
I let out a soft, amused chortle. “I’ve already asked my adoptive fathers to withdraw all the funds.”
Chiara’s tears stopped at once. “Really?”
I nodded with a smile.
The Rossi family was on the verge of collapse years ago. All five mafia families refused to get involved with
their troubles.
I traveled all the way to Europe to beg my adoptive fathers for help.
They transferred funds through offshore accounts just for my sake.
I had never told Leonardo about this. He always thought I was a lonely orphan with no family.
I did not mean to hide it from him. I had many adoptive fathers with powerful backgrounds. I had planned to introduce them to him after the baby was born.
Now that we were splitting up, there was no longer any connection between us. The funds had to be
withdrawn.
“Where will you go next?”
I tilted my head back and breathed in the gray air. “I’m just going to enjoy life and wander around.”
After graduating from boarding school, I traveled all over the world. I only came to New York for fun. I never expected to meet Leonardo and stay here for years.
That chapter of my life was over.
Chiara hugged me tightly at the airport, reluctant to let go. “I hope you can be as free and bold as you once
were.”
I cracked a smile and waved goodbye. “I’m leaving.”
The moment I left, Leonardo was consumed by regret.
He regretted slapping me nine times. I had just recovered from the abortion surgery and was in poor health, yet I endured those harsh blows.
He wondered how I was doing now.
As for the divorce papers, he was convinced I would never leave him for real.
He believed I would come back once the mandatory waiting period for divorce ended. After all, I had loved him so deeply.
“Mr. Rossi, thank you for standing up for me today.”
Isabella walked in with a newly brewed cup of espresso in her hands. She looked shy and bashful.
“Please have some coffee.”
Leonardo glanced at her coldly and made no move to take the cup. “You don’t need to come to work tomorrow.”
Isabella froze. “Did I do something wrong, sir?”
Leonardo leaned back in his chair and lit a cigarette. “I don’t need a reason to fire you. Get out.”
Her eyes turned red. “Don, you’ve always been kind to me ever since I started working here. You let me use
your phone to send those messages, took me out shopping and let me record videos. You even fought with
Donna for me and signed the divorce papers. How can you dismiss me just like that?”
He let out a cold snort. He flicked the cigarette ash and looked at her as if she were a fool.
