Chiara was boiling with anger. Several men held her back, or she would have charged straight at him.
“Leonardo! Have you got a conscience? If it weren’t for Sophia, you would have ended up behind bars years ago—”
“Chiara!” I called out and stepped forward calmly.
Every soldier in the room turned their eyes to me. Leonardo’s expression looked awkward. He clearly did not want me to hear his true thoughts.
I looked straight at Leonardo. “I’m taking her away.”
Leonardo leaned back against the sofa and spoke in a slow, unhurried tone.
“She hit one of my people. She can’t just leave like this.”
I glanced at the woman leaning against Leonardo with red-rimmed eyes, then turned my gaze back to him.
“What do you want then?”
His eyes turned cold and sharp.
“Your friend slapped my girl. Someone has to pay that debt.”
Chiara let out a mocking laugh. “You want me to take the hit? Are you out of your mind? Do you know who I am?”
“I have no interest in your identity,” Leonardo interrupted her. “And I’m not asking you to pay up. Your friend made the mistake for your sake, Sophia. You should settle this bill.”
Chiara trembled with rage and prepared to lunge at them.
I held her back with one hand.
“Fine.”
“Sophia, are you crazy?” Chiara stared at me in shock. “He’s the one who cheated on you! Why do we have to bow down?”
I sighed and whispered to soothe her. “This is the Ricci family’s stronghold. I just want to get you out safely.”
I knew very well that Leonardo was only trying to force me to submit again.
I walked over to stand in front of Leonardo and Isabella.
“Do it.”
Leonardo squeezed the wine glass in his hand until it shattered, anger flaring up in his eyes. “Is it really so hard for you to bow your head and apologize, Sophia Conti?”
I had lowered my head to him countless times before, all because I loved him and chose to chase him shamelessly.
But that love was gone now. I had the entire European underground alliance standing behind Sophia Conti.
He was not worthy of my submission.
“Just do it,” I repeated in a steady voice.
Isabella raised her hand, yet hesitated. She spoke in a timid, aggrieved voice.
“Don, your wife looks so fierce. I don’t dare.”
Smack.
Leonardo grabbed her wrist and swung her hand hard across my cheek.
A burning stinging pain spread across my face instantly.
I turned to leave after the slap.
“Who said you could go?” Leonardo’s voice was as cold as ice.
“She took one slap. I want you to pay her back ten times over.”
Shock washed over me, and my eyes grew red. I had chased him and loved him with everything I had, only to end up suffering such humiliation.
Chiara was held back by the guards. She pointed at Leonardo and shouted angrily. “Don’t you dare hit her again! I swear I will raze the entire Ricci family to the ground! Leonardo, have you lost your mind? She just had surgery, her body is still extremely weak!”
Leonardo’s expression darkened at the words about the surgery. He grabbed Isabella’s hand and kept slapping me again and again.
One. Two. Three.
Chiara broke down screaming. “Blame everything on me! Don’t hurt her!”
“Leonardo Ricci! She is the sole heiress to the entire European underworld!”
The sound of slaps drowned out her shouts.
Nine heavy blows landed on my face. With every slap, the last trace of love in my heart faded away little by little.
When the final slap fell, I felt nothing at all.
Warm liquid trickled from the corner of my mouth. I spat out the blood and wiped my lips.
Leonardo, your turn is over. Now it’s my turn.
