The metallic taste of blood spread through my mouth. I winced in pain.
We had dated for one year and been married for four. He had never taken the initiative to kiss me once.
During every intimate moment between us, I was always the one to make the first move.
There was a time when I dreamed of him being forward with me.
But now, all I felt was utter disgust.
I bit him hard in return.
He pulled away abruptly, stung by the bite.
I looked up at him with tear-filled eyes. “Go find another woman to bear your child. Your assistant would be more than happy to do it.”
Leonardo looked stunned.
“I mean it!” I shouted, my voice breaking with rage. “Go pester her instead. You disgust me completely.”
He locked his gaze on me, staring me down for three full seconds. Then a cold laugh escaped his lips.
“Fine. I’ll grant your wish.”
“Don’t come crying to me when you regret this.”
The front door slammed shut with a loud bang.
Silence fell over the room.
Tears slid down my cheeks silently, and soon I broke down into loud sobs.
I cried for all the grievances I had endured over the years.
Leonardo, I will never regret this. I will never humble myself and beg for your love again.
I wiped away my tears and picked up my phone to make a call.
“This is Sophia Conti. Issue an order in my name. Withdraw all capital invested in the Rossi family.”
“Also, prepare a set of divorce papers for me.”
Leonardo did not come home the entire night.
I had no idea where to look for him, and I had no desire to do so anyway.
A video popped up on my phone soon after, followed immediately by a voice message from Chiara.
“Sophia! Can you believe what I just saw?”
“I was shopping in SoHo and ran into your husband. He was with another woman, and he knelt down personally to tie her shoelaces!”
“You’re only four months pregnant, and he can’t wait to fool around with someone else? That man has no shame at all. I’m going to get people to teach them both a lesson.”
My friend had always been fearless. I could act recklessly when I stayed in Europe, and she was just the same.
I opened the video.
The man who always held his head high in front of me knelt down at the girl’s coquettish request, a helpless smile on his face.
The girl took out her phone to record the scene, and he smiled helplessly without stopping her.
A sharp pain tugged at my heart.
I had always hoped to receive such gentle gestures from him.
But he always put on a condescending look. He never refused me, yet never accepted me either, leaving me embarrassed and forcing me to find a way out on my own.
I pressed my lips together and replied to Chiara’s message.
“I’m getting a divorce.”
My phone rang right after I sent the text. It was my family’s consigliere.
“Ma’am, your friend has caused trouble. The Don has detained her. Please come over at once.”
Chiara had a fiery temper. I had never expected her to lash out so quickly.
This was not my territory. I wondered if I could protect her fully.
I told my driver to take me to the family compound.
Loud shouting drifted over before I even stepped through the gate.
“Leonardo! How could you do this to Sophia? She’s only four months pregnant, yet you flaunt another woman in public and tie her shoelaces for her!”
“Sophia treated you with all her heart and loved you deeply—”
“I never asked for her devotion.” Leonardo cut her off with a cold face.
I froze on the spot. His voice continued to ring out.
“Did I force her to be good to me? Did I force her to love me? She threw herself at me voluntarily back then, climbed into my bed, and married me the moment I showed a little interest.”
“So what if she cared for me? I never loved her, so why should I return her feelings? Just because she’s pregnant, do I have to stay trapped by her side forever?”
