He Married His Childhood Sweetheart for a Day, Then Lost Me Forever Chapter 03

The words had barely left my mouth when Keira, who was cutting cake nearby, burst out The announcement for tomorrow’s research presentation had been revised: my name was gone, replaced by Keira’s.
That was the last straw. I picked up the phone and held it out to Adrian.
“What is this?” I demanded.
Adrian looked unconcerned. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. Keira is up for a medical advisory position. This paper would really help her application, so I changed the author.”
“I spent three years on this research. Why should I hand it over to her?”
“Isn’t medical research supposed to benefit society? As long as it gets published, that’s all that matters. Who the author is doesn’t matter at all.”
“Vivian, since when did you become so obsessed with fame?”
His words almost made me laugh in disbelief. “I’m obsessed with fame? If the author doesn’t matter, then why change it to hers?”
Adrian’s patience snapped. “Vivian, don’t forget that every piece of medical equipment and every resource for your research came from me. Without me, you’re nothing.”
The final announcement also named Keira as the presenter.
My voice was shaking.
“Why would you do this? You know this is three years of my life.”
Adrian shrugged. “I told you, I’m just borrowing the paper to help Keira land the advisory position. Once she gets it, I’ll put your name back.”
Keira’s eyes turned red at the rims. “Vivian, I’m sorry. I really need this position. That’s the only reason I borrowed your paper. If it bothers you, I’ll give up the application.”
Adrian pulled Keira tightly into his arms.
“Vivian, don’t push it. Today, Keira is my wife. Who do you think you are, talking to my wife like that?”
I gave a hard nod and threw the divorce papers at him. “Fine. She’s your wife. Then I’m leaving.”
Adrian erupted, shooting to his feet, glaring at me. “Fine. You said it, not me. Let’s see if you can survive without me.”
“We’re divorced now. Get out of my house!”
Adrian shoved me out the front door. I was wearing nothing but a thin nightgown, and I didn’t even have my suitcase.
The front door slammed shut behind me.
Outside, wind howled and rain poured down in sheets. I had no umbrella, not even a proper coat.
I gritted my teeth and plunged into the storm.
The rain blurred my vision until I couldn’t tell tears from rainwater.
I stumbled through the downpour. Suddenly, a blinding light hit my eyes.
Then the screech of tires tore through the night.
A violent impact struck my back and sent me sprawling into the roadside hedges.
A sharp cramp tore through my abdomen. I reached down instinctively and felt a pool of thick, sticky blood.
The color drained from my face. Before I lost consciousness completely, I managed on instinct to dial Adrian’s number.
He arrived in under two minutes.
Under the streetlight, he saw the blood staining the hem of my nightgown, and his breathing turned ragged.
“Vivian! Vivian, are you okay?” He scooped me up, about to carry me to the car.
Then Keira’s name flashed across his phone screen.
“Babe, it’s my birthday today. Didn’t you promise to stay with me?”
Adrian’s expression froze. He looked down at me, barely breathing.
