He Married His Childhood Sweetheart for a Day, Then Lost Me Forever Chapter 02

The words had barely left my mouth when Keira, who was cutting cake nearby, burst out It wasn’t until noon that they returned to the mansion, laughing and shoving each other as they came in from the wedding.
Keira’s white gown was smeared with cake frosting, and Adrian wasn’t much better.
One look at them and you could tell how wild the party had been.
That was when Adrian’s mother came home.
The moment she saw Keira, she pulled an heirloom ring from her purse.
“Keira, I’ve thought of you as my future daughter-in-law since you were a child. If only you hadn’t gone abroad back then…”
She glanced at me from the corner of her eye and left the rest unsaid.
But the meaning was clear enough.
Adrian stepped between them. “Mom, it’s Keira’s birthday. I’m only granting her wish for a single day.”
His mother shook her head with a sigh. “If only you two were really together.”
I pretended not to hear a word and walked straight past them into the bedroom, packing all my clothes into a suitcase.
The moment I finished packing, Adrian followed me in.
“Everyone’s here today. Don’t ruin the mood.”
I ignored him and dragged the suitcase into the corner.
“Your medical research paper is being released tomorrow. I arranged a celebration dinner for you. Shouldn’t that make you happy?”
I stopped mid-step. That paper was the result of three years of my life and countless failed experiments.
Once published, it could save countless families.
For the patients’ sake, if not my own, I couldn’t afford to burn bridges at such a critical moment.
I nodded. “Fine. Just this one dinner.”
Adrian’s face lit up and he turned to go make calls in the living room.
I slowly made my way downstairs and found Keira lounging on the living room sofa, lazily popping grapes into her mouth, looking every bit like the lady of the house.
The second she saw me, she spoke to me like a servant. “Vivian, since you and Adrian are divorced now, how can you just stand around doing nothing? How do you have the nerve to stay in this house?”
“We still need someone to cook. You wouldn’t want guests to complain about poor hospitality, would you?”
Adrian came over and patted my shoulder. “Vivian, the housekeeper isn’t here today, and Keira doesn’t cook. Would you mind?”
I opened my mouth to argue, but then I remembered that with Adrian’s current influence, offending him would definitely affect tomorrow’s release of my paper.
So I swallowed my pride, rolled up my sleeves, and walked into the kitchen.
The churning in my stomach hadn’t let up when my lower abdomen began cramping in waves.
I pushed through the intense discomfort and worked in the kitchen alone.
Keira and Adrian were cuddled up on the sofa, snacking and watching TV.
Their grating laughter kept drifting in from the living room.
The guests started arriving.
I brought the dishes to the table one by one. By then, I was drenched in sweat and could barely straighten my back.
Keira, who had been scrolling on her phone, suddenly cried out, “A new restaurant just opened, and the food looks amazing. I want to eat there.”
The guests looked a bit uncomfortable at the sight of my full spread, but Adrian didn’t care.
He stroked Keira’s hair indulgently. “Sure. Let’s go there then. I’ll make a reservation right now.”
I watched, helpless, as Keira dumped every last dish into the trash.
“Vivian, you should come too. At least this way you won’t have to cook, and you can take a break.”
My fists clenched inside my sleeves. I was shaking with fury, but the thought of tomorrow’s paper made me force the words out through gritted teeth.
“No, thanks. I’m not hungry. You all go ahead.”
Adrian’s expression darkened. “That won’t do. This is supposed to be your celebration dinner. Come on, stop being difficult.”
I was about to respond when a colleague leaned close, holding out a phone. “Vivian, look at this,” they whispered.
My eyes went wide when I saw what was on the screen.
