Eight Months Pregnant, He Signed For My Death Chapter 04
For a brief moment, something flickered in Caleb’s eyes.Â
Then it was gone, replaced by anger.Â
“I’m rotten?” he snapped. “How exactly am I rotten? Vivian, don’t forget, without me, you’d still be stuck in a place like this for the rest of your life.”Â
His expression twisted into a cold smile.Â
“And don’t forget, the money you used to buy this apartment came from my account. This place belongs to me too. I can doÂ
whatever I want with it.”Â
He let out a sharp laugh.Â
“You think I’ve dirtied this place? Forget dirtying it. Even if I blow this dump to pieces, it has nothing to do with you.”Â
He gestured sharply.Â
The bodyguards dragged me outside.Â
Moments later, explosives were set up around the crumblingÂ
building.Â
At his command, the world I had cherished… the only placeÂ
that held our purest memories… was reduced to rubble.Â
Flames shot into the sky.Â
Debris scattered.Â
And my tears fell without end.Â
Caleb watched me, his anger fading as he noticed the tears onÂ
my face.Â
When he spoke again, his tone was cold but calmer.Â
“Vivian, what do I have to say for you to understand? I gaveÂ
you the title of Mrs. Vance. I moved you into a villa in EmeraldÂ
Cove. I put six–figure handbags on your arm. EverythingÂ
you’re wearing right now is custom couture most people couldÂ
never afford in a lifetime.”Â
He stared at me.Â
“Is that not enough?”Â
“You’re thirty now. You’re not young anymore. Do you really expect me to still love you the way I used to?”Â
“I’ve given you status. I’ve given you a life of luxury. All I’m asking is that you look the other way. Accept Lexi and theÂ
child. Is that so hard?”Â
I met his gaze, steady and unyielding.Â
“I won’t.”Â
Each word was deliberate.Â
“Caleb, everything we had is already gone. You erased itÂ
yourself.”Â
“Let’s get a divorce.”Â
A flash of irritation crossed his face.Â
“Divorce?” he said flatly. “Not happening. I may not love you anymore, but you’re still the most important person in myÂ
life. I’m not divorcing you.”Â
He looked at me, speaking slowly, as if delivering a verdict.Â
“I’ve never wronged you. If anyone deserves my guilt, it’sÂ
Lexi. I couldn’t give her a name. I made her stay with me through the best years of her life without anything to show forÂ
it.”Â
“I was going to let you keep your dignity. But you just had to push things this far.”Â
He turned away from me.Â
Then, in front of everyone, he dropped to one knee.Â
From his pocket, he pulled out a massive diamond ring.Â
“Lexi,” he said, his voice suddenly gentle, “I met you too late.Â
I can’t give you a legal title in this life. But I want to give you the biggest wedding possible. I want the whole world to knowÂ
that you’re the one I love most.”Â
Lexi covered her mouth, her eyes reddening with emotion.Â
But she turned her head away, her voice trembling.Â
“I can’t accept that. I love you, so I’m willing to throw away my pride and stay by your side like this… but I won’t let the whole world see me as your mistress.”Â
She paused, then looked straight at me.Â
“Unless… Mrs. Vance agrees to be our officiant.”Â
Her eyes gleamed with malice.Â
“Let her stand in front of everyone and admit that the oneÂ
who isn’t loved is the real mistress. That she’s the thirdÂ
party.”Â
I met her gaze, expression blank.Â
Caleb’s voice turned icy.Â
“Vivian, don’t forget. Your parents‘ ashes are buried in aÂ
cemetery I paid for.”Â
He stepped closer, his words slow and deliberate.Â
“You wouldn’t want them to end up like this place… wouldÂ
you?”Â
It felt like something had been carved out of my chest.Â
Even breathing hurt.Â
I nodded slowly.Â
“Fine. I’ll do it.”Â
Lexi broke into a radiant smile and threw herself into Caleb’sÂ
arms.Â
They left together to choose a wedding dress and book aÂ
venue.Â
Just before leaving, Caleb paused.Â
For once, his tone softened slightly.Â
“Vivian, it’s just a wedding. It won’t change your position asÂ
Mrs. Vance.”Â
“I know,” I said calmly.Â
He studied me for a moment, then finally smiled.Â
“You don’t need to take care of Lexi for now. Stay in the hospital and rest. After the baby is born, we’ll take the child onÂ
a trip. The three of us.”Â
He said it like a promise.Â
“Consider it my way of making it up to you.”Â
“Okay,” I replied.Â
Only then did Caleb leave, satisfied.
