A Regret Named Me Chapter 07
The moment the plane took off, the familiar scenery slowly disappeared, and so did the ties I had left behind.
It was as if Shawn and Nadia had vanished from my world.
My coworkers at the hospital abroad welcomed me warmly. They helped me get familiar with the environment and patiently guided me through my work.
Throwing myself into work helped me forget about my troubles for a while.
My supervising physician, Simon Kent, seemed puzzled by how hard I was working.
“I heard you didn’t get the annual recognition award back home,” he said. “How did that happen? Did something go wrong?”
I told Simon everything that happened, and he patted me on the shoulder.
“The truth always comes to light,” he said. “Don’t worry. Just settle in here. The pay and benefits are excellent.”
That night, Charles called me from back home.
“Janet, we’ve looked into what happened. Dr. Jacobson also spoke up on your behalf. You don’t have to worry about the annual employee award anymore.”
He sighed and added, “I don’t think any of us expected Nadia to be this manipulative. The two of you were so close, too.”
I looked out the window. I replied calmly, “It’s all in the past now. I don’t care anymore.”
Charles sounded relieved. “I’m glad you’ve thought it through. The hospital will send your year-end bonus over soon. Just settle in and focus on your work there.”
After hanging up, I assisted Simon with another major surgery.
Even my coworkers praised me, saying I was more than capable of becoming a doctor. I merely smiled and said nothing.
Before, I worked harder than anyone else. I gave my all just so I could stand beside Shawn.
I had wanted to prove to him through my ability that I wasn’t stupid and that I was worthy of being his girlfriend.
Yet no matter how hard I tried, he only ever saw Nadia.
Only then did I realize that I should work hard for myself and give myself the answers I needed. It shouldn’t have been for anyone else.
Just as I was about to leave after a busy day, a nurse knocked on my office door.
She said, “Dr. Lindon, someone is here to see you.”
“Okay,” I replied.
I was about to stand up when the most familiar face appeared at the door.
Shawn rushed in, completely out of breath. He grabbed my hand without a word.
“Janet, how could you leave without saying anything?” he asked. “Did you ever think about how I felt? Do you know how worried I was about you? I was going crazy!”
Seeing through his act of concern, I yanked my hand away.
“This is a hospital. Don’t grab me like that,” I said. “Besides, I left you a note. We’re done. There’s nothing else to say.”
As soon as I said that, Shawn stepped closer again.
“You think you can just decide we’re over? Who gave you the right? I never agreed to a breakup!” he said. “Come home with me right now.
“I can get you a doctor’s position back home. Do you want to work in the ER? Or cardiothoracic surgery? Just say the word, and I’ll make it happen.”
With just a few careless words, he brushed aside the dream I had spent five years working toward.
He never saw how hard I worked. To him, my ambitions were just something laughable.
Now, I no longer needed him to recognize my worth.
I looked him in the eye and said with absolute certainty, “I can succeed here too.”
I added, “More importantly, you’re not here.”
