A Regret Named Me Chapter 08

A Regret Named Me Chapter 08

Shawn’s eyes grew red-rimmed. It was as if my words had hit a nerve.

“Janet, do you really hate me that much?” he asked.

I curled my lips into a mocking smile. “Why wouldn’t I hate you? Don’t come looking for me again.”

After saying that, I called security and had them throw him out.

For the next few days, he waited outside the hospital every day until I got off work.

Just like he used to, he watched over me from a distance and walked me home.

But the spark I once felt was gone.

Three days later, I had just finished surgery. When I opened my office door, Nadia was already sitting in my chair.

I tensed up and asked, “What are you doing here?”

She twirled my pen in her hand, acting like she didn’t have a care in the world.

“I came to check on my best friend, of course,” she said. “You have a much brighter future ahead of you now, so I should celebrate with you. Dinner’s on me tonight.”

I scoffed at her sarcastic remarks.

“You still have the nerve to call yourself my best friend?” I asked. “I never imagined you would betray me like

that.”

Nadia suddenly laughed and walked slowly over to me.

“Then tell me, did you ever really see me as your friend?” she asked in return. “Janet, stop pretending you’re better than everyone else. You’re the biggest hypocrite of them all.

“You’ve always relied on your looks to make men chase after you. Do you even know what it’s like to always be the one standing in someone else’s shadow?”

I was confused. “I never thought you were just there to make me look better. You’ve always had good grades.

“I was genuinely happy for you, so how could you think that?”

Nadia laughed coldly. “You were genuinely happy for me?”

She continued, “Fine, then. Shawn and I are together now. Don’t be upset, okay? I hope you can truly be happy for me.”

The ambition blazing in her eyes made me feel like I no longer knew her.

But none of it mattered to me anymore.

I felt nothing but calm. I simply nodded and said, “Well, if you’re not bothered by having someone else’s leftovers, be my guest.”

The next moment, Nadia raised her hand in anger, about to slap me.

Just then, Shawn rushed over and shoved her to the ground. “Nadia, what are you doing?”

He turned around and checked me over.

“Did she hurt you?” he asked.

I backed away from him and shook my head. “I’m fine.”

His hands froze in midair.

Nadia struggled to her feet, a look of resentment in her eyes.

“Shawn, what’s so great about Janet? Why are you lowering yourself for her?” she asked. “What does she have that I don’t? Why can’t you choose me?”

Shawn laughed mockingly when he heard that.

“Someone who betrays others doesn’t deserve me,” he said. “If you hurt Janet again, I’ll make you regret it.”

After saying that, he grabbed her arm and threw her out of my office.

The room fell silent again. Shawn turned to me with a gentle smile.

“Janet, I’ll protect you from now on. I won’t let anyone hurt you,” he said. “If you want to stay here, I’ll stay with you.”

The old me would have been overwhelmed with emotion.

But now, I only felt repulsed.

“Shawn, we can never go back to the way things are,” I said. “From now on, take care.”

With that, I walked out.

Just then, a speeding car came rushing at me.

I couldn’t dodge it in time. Before I knew it, Shawn had thrown himself in front of me and shielded me with his body.

He ended up lying in a pool of blood.

Only then did I finally see who was behind the wheel. It was Nadia.

She sat frozen in the car until the police arrived and finally snapped back to reality.

“Shawn, why did you do something so stupid?” she screamed.

Nadia collapsed into tears.

Shawn had lost too much blood, and it was unlikely he would wake up.

The surgery to save him was performed by other doctors. I had no part in it.

Whether he woke up was no longer my concern.

I would learn to live without the two of them.

And I would move toward a future filled with hope, alone.
