A Regret Named Me Chapter 06
“Shawn, let’s break up.”
Shawn stared at those words for a very long time.
It was definitely Janet’s handwriting.
“She’s breaking up with me?” he muttered.
An overwhelming sense of disbelief hit him. He said, “How is that even possible? How could Janet break up with me?”
Nadia edged closer to him and gently tried to comfort him.
“Maybe she’s just playing a prank-”
“Impossible!” Shawn suddenly raised his voice, cutting her off. “She would never casually talk about breaking up, much less write it down on a note.”
Then he suddenly remembered that Janet had brought it up once before, on the day she was hospitalized.
He had been shocked at the time. But then he thought, how could Janet ever bring herself to leave him?
So he had turned his surprise into ridicule.
Maybe that was when she had already started to think about leaving him.
“Why?” Shawn stood there frozen. He looked as if all his strength had been drained away.
Nadia leaned against him suggestively, a flash of calculation passing through her eyes.
“Maybe she fell for someone else?” she said. “I never told you this, but she’s always busy texting someone lately. Perhaps it’s some other man.”
When she looked up, she noticed Shawn glaring at her.
“What are you talking about?” he snapped. “How could Janet ever betray me?”
As he said that, he shoved Nadia aside.
“I’m going to find her. I need to talk this out with her,” he said. “I don’t believe she has really left me.”
He quickly packed his suitcase.
But just when he was about to leave, Nadia blocked the doorway.
“She’s not worth you doing this!” she exclaimed. “Wake up, Shawn. Janet is useless, and she can’t do anything right. How is she even worthy of your love?”
“How can you say that about her?” Shawn froze, looking shocked.
He had always thought Nadia saw Janet as her best friend and genuinely cared about her.
Nadia suddenly laughed.
“Why can’t I say that about her?” she asked. “She has always been stupid and naive. She’s still just a nurse even
now.
“Take a good look at me, Shawn. I worked hard for years just to stand beside you as your equal. Are you saying you never noticed?”
Shawn stood there, frozen in shock.
It was as if he only realized at that moment that Nadia had always loved him.
He suddenly scoffed. “What are you talking about? Janet is my only girlfriend. Who the hell do you think you are?
Nadia’s eyes widened in disbelief at his words. She had always thought Shawn’s unconditional favoritism toward her meant he had feelings for her.
She had secretly reveled in her victory, convinced she had finally come out on top over Janet.
“How can you say that to me?” she asked.
Shawn stared into her eyes. His own were bloodshot.
“If I had known how manipulative you were, I never would’ve let you near me,” he said. “I was nice to you because you were Janet’s friend.
“I didn’t want her to lose someone important to her just because she was dating me.”
Suddenly, he seemed to think of something.
“That day in the operating room, you administered the wrong dosage on purpose, didn’t you?” he asked.
Nadia’s eyes shifted away, and she didn’t answer.
Shawn laughed angrily, placing his hands on his hips.
“Nadia, someone like you doesn’t deserve the kindness Janet showed you,” he said. “I’ll tell Dr. Colton the truth and make sure you’re fired.”
Hearing that, Nadia sank to the floor in despair.
Shawn glared at her, then stormed out of the apartment.
On the way to the airport, Shawn couldn’t shake the tension weighing on him.
If he really saw Janet, he didn’t know what he would say to her.
