They Dragged Me Off The Plane And Dozens Died Waiting Chapter 05
The officers didn’t stop. They were doing their jobs, preparing to take me out of the airport.Â
They had me by the arms as the armed team passed us.Â
I knew there was nothing I could do now.Â
The plane had already pulled back from the gate. Getting me on board now would mean calling it back or sending a shuttle bus, either way, it wouldÂ
take time I didn’t have.Â
Either way, time was gone.Â
The children’s chances were getting smaller by theÂ
minute.Â
I was drowning in guilt and regret.Â
Why had I wasted time arguing with them? If I’dÂ
just had James call the airport directly, it wouldÂ
have saved so much trouble.Â
I shouldn’t have assumed a simple explanation would fix everything.Â
I definitely shouldn’t have asked James to helpÂ
cover my tracks so I could sneak home to see myÂ
parents. Why did I have to cut it so close?Â
If I hadn’t come home, I could have been at theÂ
scene from the start.Â
None of this would have happened.Â
Just as we were about to leave the passengerÂ
area, someone called my name. “Emily Carter? Dr.Â
Carter?”Â
I looked up. A man was sitting in one of thoseÂ
airport shuttle carts.Â
He jumped off before the cart even stopped.Â
“It is you, Dr. Carter.”Â
“What’s going on here? Why have you arrested Dr.Â
Carter?” he shouted at the officers holding me.Â
“Please don’t interfere with our work,” one officerÂ
said coldly.Â
“Just wait. Let me make a call. Unbelievable.”Â
“Do you have any idea how badly you’ve messedÂ
up? If something goes wrong, you call yourselvesÂ
police officers?”Â
“You’ll go to prison. You’ll be remembered as theÂ
biggest failures in history.” He was already dialingÂ
as he spoke.Â
“How did you assign the teams? They’re about to drag Dr. Carter away. I thought you said she was already on the plane?”Â
“Get it together. No, don’t tell me over my phone. Call their commander. Now.”Â
Less than twenty seconds after he hung up, theÂ
lead officer’s phone rang.Â
The person on the other end was practicallyÂ
screaming. I could hear every word.Â
“I told you to protect Dr. Carter, and you’reÂ
arresting her?”Â
“Turn around right now and make sure she gets onÂ
that damn plane!”Â
I watched sweat break out on the officer’sÂ
forehead.Â
“But the plane is about to take off.”Â
“Do I have to tell you how to do your job? Stop it.Â
The tactical team is there too. Stop it together.”Â
“Make sure Dr. Carter is on that flight and getsÂ
safely to Oak Ridge City!”Â
“Sergeant Thompson, we’ve got twenty–threeÂ
preschool children and twelve staff members.”Â
“Thirty–five lives are in our hands.”Â
“Only Dr. Carter can save them. Do you understandÂ
me?”
