The Rabbit Girl Who Shook the Walker Family Chapter 08
Rachel closed her mouth. For once, she hadÂ
nothing else to say. Ethan placed the recorder in his palm. He did not continue playing it. Instead, he took a clear evidence bag from the inner pocketÂ
of his suit. His movements were practiced, as if he had handled many things more troublesome thanÂ
this.Â
Lily stared at the evidence bag.Â
“Mister, are you going to put Mommy inside?”Â
Ethan’s movement stopped. He looked down atÂ
her.Â
“No.”Â
“I’m protecting the voice recorder.”Â
Lily loosened the rabbit’s ear.Â
“Then can Mommy still talk?”Â
Ethan looked at her red eyes. His voice lowered aÂ
little.Â
“Yes.”Â
“But we have to listen slowly.”Â
Lily nodded.Â
“Then be gentle.”Â
Ethan Walker placed the recorder into theÂ
evidence bag. When he pressed down the seal, heÂ
really did it gently. Lucas glanced at him.Â
“Play it.”Â
Ethan shook his head.Â
“The original is sealed first.”Â
“If we play it now, people will have a chance toÂ
claim it was edited or switched.”Â
Rachel cut in at once.”Â
“So you know it could have been edited.”Â
“Then this thing can’t be evidence.”Â
Ethan looked up.Â
“I said we need to find out who edited it.”Â
Rachel’s smile stopped. John stepped forward.Â
“Watch your mouth, Ethan. Accusations haveÂ
consequences.”Â
Ethan glanced at him.Â
“Don’t worry, John.”Â
“I don’t make accusations. I investigate.”Â
He turned to the butler.Â
“Preserve the banquet hall surveillance.”Â
“Seal tonight’s display computer, backendÂ
accounts, and audio equipment.”Â
“Everyone’s phones on–site will be registered forÂ
now.”Â
Someone frowned.Â
“Ethan, are you treating us like criminals?”Â
Ethan’s face remained expressionless.Â
“If this is just a misunderstanding, registering yourÂ
phone will not hurt you.”Â
The person choked.Â
When Lily heard that, she quickly looked atÂ
Rachel’s hand.Â
Lucas pulled her a little closer to his side.Â
“He isn’t talking about you.”Â
Lily said a small, “Oh.”Â
Her hand still clutched the rabbit. The stuffedÂ
rabbit’s belly had torn open. A bit of cottonÂ
showed. Lucas saw it. He reached a hand towardÂ
the butler.Â
“Needle and thread.”Â
The butler froze.Â
“Sir?”Â
Lucas glanced at him. The butler went to look atÂ
once. Soon, a sewing kit was brought over. LucasÂ
opened it. Looking at the needle and thread inside,Â
his brows furrowed slightly. Lily glanced at himÂ
too.Â
“Can you sew?”Â
Lucas was silent. Ethan stood beside him andÂ
said flatly, “Lucas, I suggest you don’t let the rabbitÂ
suffer a second injury.” Lucas looked up. LilyÂ
hugged the stuffed rabbit back into her arms atÂ
once.Â
“Then, then don’t sew it yet.”Â
She covered the stuffed rabbit’s belly with her littleÂ
hand.Â
“It doesn’t hurt.”Â
Lucas studied the rabbit she was shielding. He didÂ
not touch the sewing kit again. Ethan WalkerÂ
handed the voice recorder to his assistant.Â
“Send it for voiceprint analysis, editing traceÂ
analysis, and memory chip extraction.”Â
The assistant nodded.Â
“Yes.”Â
Rachel’s voice came out a little urgent.Â
“Wait.”Â
Several gazes in the hall turned toward her. SheÂ
smiled.Â
“I mean, the thing was brought by the child afterÂ
all.”Â
“Before it’s sent out, we should at least confirmÂ
what’s inside.”Â
Ethan glanced at her.Â
“What are you anxious about?”Â
Rachel’s face stiffened.Â
“I just think the process lacks transparency.”Â
Ethan Walker raised the evidence bag. The numberÂ
on the seal was clear.Â
“From now on, I’m in charge of the process.”Â
“If you want to see it, hire a lawyer.”Â
Sophie hid behind Rachel.Â
She said in a small voice, “Mommy, I’m scared.”Â
Rachel caught hold of her.Â
“It’s okay. Don’t be afraid.”Â
When Lily heard those words, she hid a little behind Lucas. She was scared too. But no one hadÂ
taught her what to say now. Old Mr. Walker’s gaze landed on the two children. One was held by her mother. The other held a rabbit with a torn belly and stood alone.Â
His hand slowly tightened around his cane.Â
“Lily, come to Grandpa.”Â
Lily looked up at Lucas. Lucas nodded. Only then did she carry the rabbit over. There was no child’s chair beside Old Mr. Walker. The butler had toÂ
bring a low stool. Lily sat on it, her feet just hanging in the air.Â
Old Mr. Walker saw her shoes. The newly boughtÂ
children’s leather shoes still did not fit. The backsÂ
had rubbed her heels red. He frowned.Â
“Are the shoes uncomfortable?”Â
Lily shook her head at once.Â
“They’re comfortable.”Â
She was afraid someone would take them back.Â
Old Mr. Walker shifted his gaze to the butler.Â
“Buy another pair.”Â
“Softer.”Â
The butler answered.Â
Lily whispered, “This pair is fine too.”Â
Old Mr. Walker looked down at her.Â
“The Walker family can afford two pairs of shoes.”Â
Lily thought about it.Â
“Then don’t borrow from loan sharks either.”Â
Several servants nearby almost failed to hold backÂ
their laughter. Old Mr. Walker looked at her. After aÂ
long while, he coughed softly.Â
“Mm. We won’t.”Â
Lucas sat on the other side.
