The Rabbit Girl Who Shook the Walker Family Chapter 07
Sophie blinked.Â
“It’s on the screen.”Â
“Can’t you read?”Â
Lily could not read many words. She only recognized her mother’s name. Emma. Her mother’s name hung on the huge screen for everyone to see. Lily’s face turned pale.Â
She stepped back. Her heel caught the hem of her dress, and she nearly fell. Lucas reached out andÂ
steadied her.Â
“Don’t be afraid.”Â
Lily grabbed his sleeve. Her small fingers tightened until the joints turned white. Rachel walked to the center, looking helpless.Â
“Dad, we shouldn’t have discussed this today.”Â
“But now that the information has been released, we can’t pretend we didn’t see it.”Â
She turned to Lucas.Â
“Emma took money from the Walker family andÂ
left back then. That’s a fact.”Â
“Now this child appears at our gate. Are weÂ
supposed to believe no one coached her?”Â
Old Mr. Walker held his cane.Â
“Rachel.”Â
Rachel’s eyes reddened slightly.Â
“Dad, I’m thinking of the Walker family too.”Â
“If Sophie enters the foundation list and outsiders see it, at most they will say the Walker familyÂ
values the next generation.”Â
“But this child is different.”Â
“Her identity is unclear.”Â
“What if people start calling her Lucas’s secret daughter? How is the Walker family supposed to face the public then?”Â
The words landed hard.Â
Secret daughter.Â
Lily did not understand all of it. But she could hearÂ
that it was bad. She looked up at Lucas.Â
“Daddy.”Â
This time, she did not change it.Â
“What does secret daughter mean?”Â
Lucas looked down at her. The hall lights fell over his face. That face still showed little emotion. ButÂ
the hand he had on Lily’s shoulder tightened slightly.Â
“It’s not a word you need to understand.”Â
Lily nodded. Then she turned to the large screen again.Â
“But Mommy had no money.”Â
She tried hard to explain.Â
“Mommy only had eight dollars and sixty cents inÂ
her bag.”Â
“And a bus pass.”Â
Someone nearby gave a quiet laugh.Â
“Of course the child doesn’t know.”Â
“Would adults tell her that kind of thing?”Â
Sophie leaned a little closer.Â
“Your Mommy took money and still sent you backÂ
to ask for more?”Â
Lily’s eyes reddened.Â
“No.”Â
“Mommy didn’t.”Â
She hurried forward. The stuffed rabbit slipped from her arms. She tried to catch it in a panic, but missed. The rabbit fell to the floor. Thud. The old fabric had already loosened.Â
When it fell, the stitches on the stuffed rabbit’s belly split open a little. Lily crouched down to pickÂ
it up.Â
“Bunny!”Â
Her voice trembled.Â
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.”Â
She held the stuffed rabbit and tried to press the torn seam back together. But inside the crack, something hard and black showed. Lily froze. She reached in with her small hand and slowly pulledÂ
out half of something from the stuffed rabbit’sÂ
belly. Ethan had been standing in a corner. WhenÂ
he saw it, his expression changed.Â
“Don’t move.”Â
Lily stopped, frightened. Ethan strode over andÂ
crouched in front of her.Â
“Lily, let me see.”Â
Lily hugged the stuffed rabbit tight, afraid. SheÂ
turned to Lucas.Â
Lucas said, “Give it to him.”Â
Only then did Lily hand it over. It was an old voice recorder. The casing was badly worn. There were traces of thread wrapped around the edge of the buttons. Ethan studied it for two seconds.Â
“Who gave this to you?”Â
Lily said softly, “Mommy sewed it inside Bunny’sÂ
belly.”Â
“She said Bunny must not be lost.”Â
Rachel’s expression had already changed. She quickly steadied herself.Â
“It’s only an old voice recorder. What can thatÂ
prove?”Â
Ethan did not answer. He pressed the play button.Â
A burst of static sounded. No one in the hall spokeÂ
again. A few seconds later, Emma’s voice cameÂ
from the recorder. It was hoarse.Â
Hoarse and painfully weak.Â
“Lily.”Â
“If anyone in the Walker family says Mommy tookÂ
money.”Â
“Give the rabbit to Ethan.”Â
The recording paused there. Lily’s eyes widened.Â
She had not heard her mother’s voice in a veryÂ
long time. She took one step forward.Â
“Mommy?”Â
In the voice recorder, Emma coughed lightly.Â
“Remember.”Â
“Don’t give it to anyone else.”Â
“Only to Ethan.”Â
Ethan looked down at the voice recorder. HisÂ
knuckles tightened little by little. Lucas stoodÂ
behind Lily. The large screen was still lit. TheÂ
five–million–dollar transfer screenshot hung on theÂ
wall. But Emma’s voice from the recorder pressedÂ
over all the whispers again and again.Â
Old Mr. Walker struck his cane hard against theÂ
floor.Â
“Close the doors.”Â
“No one leaves today.”Â
The banquet hall doors were shut by the butler.Â
When the heavy wooden doors closed, the soundÂ
was not loud. But several members of theÂ
collateral branches who had been trying to retreatÂ
stopped in place. Rachel’s face went slightly pale.Â
She quickly forced a smile.Â
“Dad, isn’t this inappropriate?”Â
“Everyone here today is family.”Â
Old Mr. Walker looked at her.Â
“Since they’re family, they should hear it clearly.”Â
Rachel’s lips moved.
