“Chloe, give me a little more time.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
This was the moment he’d dreamed of for three years.
But for some reason, he wasn’t happy.
Instead, he felt torn.
Chloe’s face instantly went cold.
She slammed her hand on the table and stood up.
“Ethan, what’s that supposed to mean?”
“I’m finally willing to give you another chance and take you back, and now you need time to think? Don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen for that frumpy woman.”
Ethan fell silent.
The truth was, he’d noticed Nora before they ever started dating.
Back then, she’d been one of the most popular girls on campus, with countless guys pursuing her.
Whenever she passed him, she breezed by, leaving only a trace of her distinctive scent behind.
He’d made the bet with Chloe after he first saw Nora.
Even he wasn’t sure what selfish motives he might have had at the time.
When he first approached Nora, the bet hadn’t been on his mind.
After he and Nora started dating, Chloe continued to drift in and out of his life.
She had always been bold and dramatic. Once, when he kept some minor thing from her, she’d broken up
with him without hesitation.
Part of him had still resented her for it.
That lingering resentment, mixed with emotions he couldn’t define, was why he had accepted the bet.
Nora had simply been obedient enough to make it possible.
When he told her to cut her hair, she did it even though she cried.
When he told her not to wear makeup or dress up, she obeyed him every time.
Only now did he realize his feelings weren’t so simple anymore.
He shook his head.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know. I don’t know which one of you I truly love, but I don’t want to hurt Nora anymore.”
Chloe’s composure finally cracked, and her voice turned shrill.
“Ethan, you’re going to regret this! I refuse to believe you could fall in love with someone so ordinary.”
“Think about what it was like when we were together. Think about how jealous everyone was.”
“Everyone envied you for dating me. Can you really see yourself staying with Nora forever?”
Ethan frowned slightly.
Ever since Chloe had come back, she’d kept calling Nora “frumpy” and “ordinary.”
He should have agreed with her.
Instead, her words left him strangely uncomfortable.
It was almost as if he didn’t want anyone judging Nora.
He stood, his voice firm.
“I’m sorry, Chloe. I lost the bet. I can’t break up with Nora.”
He lowered his gaze, smiling faintly at the thought that suddenly came to him.
“She’s afraid to sleep alone at night. She always needs someone there with her.”
Chloe’s eyes slowly reddened, and her voice began to tremble.
“Ethan, you’ve changed. You used to worry when I was afraid to sleep alone, too.”
“Now you’re giving all your love and attention to another woman. How could you do this to me? I gave you three years, and this is how you treat me?”
Ethan’s face remained expressionless. There were things he could no longer leave unsaid.
“Chloe, let’s get one thing straight. You were the one who wanted to break up. You were the one who dumped
me.”
“I don’t believe I’ve done anything wrong. Who I choose to be with is my decision.”
Chloe shook her head in disbelief.
“So you agreed just because I said we should break up?”
“Why didn’t you fight for me? If you’d asked me to stay, I would’ve come back to you. You’re even willing to fight for Nora…”
Ethan stared at her in silence for a long time.
“We aren’t right for each other. Being together only makes us miserable.”
“I can fight for some people, but not for others. Even if we got back together, we’d never be happy.”
He stood and turned to leave.
Chloe suddenly laughed.
Ethan stopped when she held up her phone in front of him.
Chloe’s post was open on the screen.
Below it was the comment his account had liked.
