The Night I Let Our Stars Fall Chapter 08
“Where are you going, Faye?” Richard asked. He looked completely bewildered as he noticed Faye knocking on Caleb’s door. “You’re looking for Caleb? He has already checked out of his room, Faye.”
Faye’s hand froze mid-knock. She stiffened, slowly turning her head toward Richard, asking, “When did Caleb check out? Isn’t our trip supposed to end this afternoon?”
“Caleb left after dinner last night, saying something had come up at home. He probably went back to Borrengate. Hold on. Do you need something from him? You two don’t usually interact much, so why are you suddenly looking for him, Faye?”
Faye didn’t respond to him. She hurriedly picked up her phone, only to find that the chat window was filled with nothing but her own texts. Caleb hadn’t replied, and it was entirely possible he hadn’t even read the messages. She ignored everything else and went straight to call him, but his phone was turned off.
Richard and the rest of the group were completely baffled. He turned to the others and asked, “Did Caleb mention anything before leaving? What was so urgent that he had to return to Borrengate? It’s been so long, so he should have arrived home by now.”
It was then that one of the women in the group instantly assumed a gossiping expression. “Haven’t you guys seen his social media posts? Caleb was rushing back to Borrengate to have a meal with his girlfriend and both of their parents. He’s probably right in the middle of it now.”
Faye immediately looked up, her expression darkening. “How could that be? How could they be having a meal together when my parents aren’t even in Borrengate?”
That woman shot her a bewildered look. “Who said anything about you, Faye? You’re not even Caleb’s girlfriend. You guys should check your social media-Ruth literally posted a huge collage of photos about it.”
Faye’s mind went blank for a moment as she pondered who Ruth was.
Richard and the others took out their phones, opened their social media, and started clapping excitedly afterward. “It turns out to be Ruth! It’s no wonder Caleb said his girlfriend wasn’t here earlier-Ruth left the first night, so she wasn’t around either!”
It was only then that Faye remembered that Ruth was the one who had drawn the same number as Caleb a few days ago. Ruth kept such a low profile in class that Faye had never even added her on social media.
Faye’s eyes widened in shock as she ripped the phone right out of Richard’s hand.
She then noticed a group shot in one of the photos, with their parents seated in the front row, while Caleb, dressed up in a sharp suit, stood shoulder to shoulder with Ruth behind them. He wore a warm, tender smile, his arm wrapped tightly around her.
Richard and the rest of the group were still in complete disbelief, while that woman flashed them a knowing look and asked, “Did you guys actually read the caption?”
Faye looked at the bottom of the post and noticed a short caption. “I finally had my wish fulfilled after seven years of unrequited love.”
“I just found out myself, but Ruth and Caleb have actually been in the same class since freshman year of high school. Ruth pursued him relentlessly for three whole years-everyone in school knew about it!
“She even picked this exact university and major just to be with him. She kept a really low profile around us these last four years, but behind closed doors, she never stopped trying. I guess drawing the same number earlier was the ultimate proof that they were meant to be.”
In that instant, as more people joined the group, the entire crowd became completely engrossed in discussing the details.
Faye’s composure instantly shattered.
It was then that someone in the crowd asked, “Do you think they might have already gotten together back when we were in university and were just secretly dating behind our backs?”
“It’s possible. I mean, for all we know, they might have been a thing since freshman year-
“That’s impossible!” Faye harshly interrupted their teasing, her face turning pale. She then gritted her teeth and said, “I’m Caleb’s girlfriend-and we’ve been together for three whole years!”
In that instant, everyone in the hallway fell completely silent.
Richard’s jaw dropped before he gasped in shock. “H-How could that be? Why didn’t he say anything when he overheard me admitting to you that I had rigged the balls during the draw?”
Faye froze, utterly shell-shocked. “He knew it all along? That explains everything. That’s why he acted like that
