The Night I Let Our Stars Fall Chapter 07

Faye felt increasingly irritated. She finally lost her temper while knocking, directly sending him a voice message. “You said you would watch the meteor shower the entire night, so you certainly haven’t slept yet, Caleb! You’d better open the door this instant!

“What exactly are you making a fuss about? Is it just because Xavier and I stayed in a room together? You ought to be reasonable about this! You’re not a kid anymore, so you should respect the rules of the game! I have no choice but to stay with Xavier since we drew the same number, Caleb!

“You and Ruth drew the same number, too! You were likewise staying together, alone as a man and woman—”

She suddenly recalled that Ruth had already left before the trip truly began, so she quickly retracted the previous voice message. “You should open the door first, Caleb. I’ll show you the meteor shower photos I took. If it bothers you so much, I won’t wait until we settle down. I’ll go public once our jobs are stable, Caleb.”

She sent dozens of messages here and there, but not a single one received a reply. She completely lost her patience. “If you’re determined to drag this out, then go right ahead and throw your tantrum!”

She finally turned back to her room at 3:00 am, finding that Xavier was already tucked in. She then took a quick, quiet shower and slipped into bed. She slept all the way until midday, and as soon as she opened her eyes, she checked her phone, but there was still nothing from him.

Xavier, noticing that she was awake, suddenly spoke up from behind her. “Do you remember that time at the tennis courts when Caleb knocked me over? He messed up my knee so badly that I was on crutches for a month.

“You were the very first person to run over and check on me, and you even brought food to my dorm room every single day. I told my mother about it, and she said you were great and would make a perfect daughter-in-law.”

Faye’s attention was still on her phone, so she replied offhandedly, “Caleb didn’t bump into you. You fell because the janitor had just mopped the floor, and the ground was slippery. I only went to check on you because I was afraid you’d blame Caleb for getting hurt.”

Xavier was stunned and sat up in disbelief. “Why did you bring me food, then?”

“You kept saying Caleb knocked into you. I brought you food because I was afraid you’d target him, and besides, I always brought double portions, primarily for Caleb and incidentally for you-

Faye immediately came to a halt, stopping herself from saying the whole thing. She realized she had just revealed a truth she hadn’t noticed before this.

Faye turned around and noticed Xavier’s expression souring, his once clear and bright eyes now filled with bitter resentment.

Xavier snapped, “I knew my instincts were right! You and Caleb are in a relationship, and that job offer of yours was also his internal referral! Have you lost your mind, Faye? How can he compare to me? You used to like someone as perfect as me, so how can you lower your standards and be with him?”

In that instant, everyone in the room fell silent.

Faye bolted upright, her expression freezing over. “What do you mean by that, Xavier? Caleb is more genuine, smarter, and works way harder than you ever have!

“You, on the other hand, obviously looked down on me, yet you kept me on the hook from our very first semester until graduation. You always gave me that excuse about campus relationships never lasting, so how do you explain the eight girlfriends you cycled through during those four years?”

Faye left in a fit of rage before the discussion could even finish. She only brought a small bag, carefully placing her camera and laptop inside. She casually stuffed her clothes and cosmetics bag into a plastic bag before she stormed off to find Caleb.

She happened to bump into Richard and the group just as they had finished shopping for local specialties and were returning to the hotel for lunch.

They were immediately puzzled after noticing Faye’s unpleasant expression. “What’s the matter? Did things not go well between you and Xavier?”

“You guys seemed totally fine during the meteor shower last night. Did you have a falling out? Is it because he failed to get any good shots of you, Faye? You see, every time I take an unflattering photo, my girlfriend gets so mad she threatens to break up with me-”
