The Memories I Erased Chapter 08
didn’t even bother dealing with her. Turning my face toward the window, I said in a cold, indifferent tone, Yeah, you’re a complete stranger to me. Just leave.”
She spoke up urgently, a desperate plea creeping into her voice. “Damien, look at me. You loved me for eight years, so how could every single memory just be gone?
“When I ignored you before and made you do all those chores, it was only meant as a test. I didn’t believe you actually loved me. But after spending all these years together, you captured my heart a long time ago. Please don’t give up on me, okay?”
She continued muttering to herself incessantly. “Even if the memories are gone, your capacity to love me is stil there, right? As long as we keep spending time together, love will grow again.”
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I couldn’t stand listening to her anymore and gestured for Cora to kick her out.
Without a word, Cora stepped forward, grabbed her arm, and dragged her toward the door.
“Macy, get the door!”
Outside, the argument between Phoebe and Cora kept raging on. Annoyed, I ducked under the covers to hide.
Suddenly, a warm hand gently patted my shoulder, soothing my frayed nerves.
“Damien, don’t be upset,” Macy said softly. “She’s already in the past. You’re only going to get better.”
I pulled back the blanket and looked at her, involuntarily losing myself in the warmth of her eyes.
The very next day, Phoebe came back to harass me in my hospital room again. The people Phoebe had brought along were blocked outside by the bodyguards Cora hired.
“Damien, I made a nutritious meal for you with my own hands. Come taste it!” Phoebe pulled out a container, subtly turning her wrist to show off a fresh burn on her hand.
I looked at her little scheme, completely unmoved.
She began opening the gift boxes she had brought along: a technical jacket for outdoor work, a limited-edition Gothic vaulting model, a bound collection of the loose building blueprints I used to draw, and all the handmade gifts I had crafted for her back home.
Seeing all these items, a faint spark flickered inside me.
Truth be told, she knew my tastes terrifyingly well. If the version of me who still loved her were standing here seeing this, he probably would have cried from sheer emotion.
However, the present me saw straight through the motives behind her actions. She simply wanted to trigger my lost memories, not make me happy.
Finally, she pulled out a ring and dropped to one knee right in front of me.
The order of the engraved letters on the ring had been changed, now reading “PS love DR”. Seeing my initials, the same as David’s, felt utterly revolting.
“Phoebe, if you’re planning to confess to David, why are you kneeling in front of me?”
First came a shock of surprise, then a smile spread across her face.
“Damien, you’re jealous, aren’t you?”
ritted my teeth in frustration, shutting her down word by word. “It’s just like how you refused to believe me back then. No matter what gesture you make now, I won’t believe a single bit of it.”
Her face turned pale. Tears brimmed in her eyes, filled with deep hurt.
Macy burst into the room just in time, cutting off Phoebe’s attempt to keep nagging me.
Phoebe’s bottled-up rage seemed to find an instant target. She pointed a finger aggressively at Macy. “Are you rejecting me because of her?”
Her relentless dodging of responsibility made me laugh. “Whether she’s here or not, there is absolutely zero chance for us,” I said icily.
Noticing the exhaustion creeping across my face, Macy dragged Phoebe out of the room.
Through the door, I vaguely caught Macy warning her. “If you don’t want him to end up despising you, go right back in there and keep harassing him.”
Moments later, Macy walked back inside and asked cautiously, “Are you mad I dragged her away?”
I gestured for her to come closer, reaching out to gently ruffle her hair.
