The Memories I Erased Chapter 07
ith her hair disheveled and a bright red mark swelling across her face, Phoebe looked utterly unhinged.
“Cora, have you lost your mind? Damien can’t have amnesia! He’s just pretending because he’s mad at me!”
Cora let out a bitter, mocking laugh. “Oh? And why exactly would he be mad at you?”
Phoebe shrugged, her tone casual. “Jealousy, obviously. He’s throwing a fit because he thinks I care too much about David, and because I haven’t made our relationship public yet.”
A collective gasp rippled through the surrounding crowd.
“Wait, didn’t someone say the guy was controlling her? How did it suddenly turn out that she was hiding their relationship?”
“Hold on, if those two were actually a couple, then David is…”
“Didn’t you hear her earlier? She said she was planning to announce their relationship today!”
“Stop arguing and look over there!”
Cora slammed the investigative photos and my surgical consent form right in front of Phoebe’s face.
“Take a good, hard look at how you treated my brother all these years. Phoebe, our friendship ends right here.”
Phoebe’s eyes reddened as she stared at the photos showing my lonely, solitary figure.
When her eyes landed on a photo of me working on a pair of rings, absolute disbelief washed over her. “Wait… wasn’t this ring a gift from David?”
She whipped around and grabbed David, who was standing beside her with his head hung low.
“David, didn’t you say you made this ring?”
David’s eyes darted around nervously. “Phoebe, you gave that to me the night you got drunk! I thought it was your way of proposing to me…”
The letters engraved on the ring, “DR loves PS”, were glaring proof of my love for her. Yet she had used that very love to lock a bond between herself and another man.
Phoebe looked as if she had been struck by lightning, frozen in place.
Tears streamed down her face as she stumbled blindly toward me, but Cora stepped right in front of her, blocking her path.
“Save your fake devotion. He doesn’t need it anymore.”
Lying on the ground, my consciousness remained hazy. The figures in front of me blurred, becoming as indistinct and unreachable as the memories drifting away in my mind,
When I opened my eyes again, the figure of another girl appeared before me. She had a radiant smile, glowing like a little ray of sunshine.
I stared at her, feeling a strange sense of familiarity, yet I couldn’t recall her name for the life of me.
“Are you alright? You just got rescued and already forgot who I am? I’m Macy Moore, your elementary school classmate!”
“Actually, I guess I’m your senior now. Even though we’re the same age, if you’re re-enrolling under Professor Frown’s mentorship, you’re five years behind me.”
Her warm, outgoing personality got me opening up immediately.
I began talking to her about the current dilemmas in historic architecture preservation. “These structures are like living history. They’ve weathered centuries of elements, deteriorating in silence without anyone to preserve them.
“We urgently need growth in academic research, restoration techniques, next-generation talent, and public awareness.”
Macy resonated deeply with every word, her eyes sparkling brightly as she enthusiastically shared the recent developments in the field and the projects she had worked on over the years.
It felt like talking to someone I’d known for years-the connection was instant and effortless.
The passion I had set aside for so long suddenly surged back to life with vibrant energy.
During my hospital stay, Macy came to visit and talk with me every single day. Cora couldn’t help teasing us, Look at you two, becoming close friends already.”
Macy’s cheeks flushed bright red as she brushed it off, claiming it was just professional camaraderie and that she was simply taking care of her future junior colleague.
Cora clutched her stomach, laughing hysterically. “Damien, how did you spend half your life wandering around, only to end up right back at the bottom of the ladder as the junior student?”
Just as everyone was laughing together, the door suddenly swung open, and Phoebe stepped inside.
The atmosphere in the room froze instantly.
“Damien, do you really not remember me at all?”
