The Mark That Wasn’t Mine Chapter 05
It wasn’t until three hours later that AlexÂ
remembered Sarah and her grandmother.Â
He called her. Texted her. No answer. He toldÂ
himself she was upset and needed some time to cool off. She’d come back; she always did.Â
But something uneasy was growing stronger andÂ
stronger within him.Â
The door to the ward opened, and Emily walkedÂ
out, holding a note in her hand.Â
He hurried over to her. “How’s it going, honey?Â
What did the healer say?”Â
She bit her lip. “Alex… I got the results. It’s… justÂ
acute gastritis. I’m not pregnant.”Â
“What?!” His voice shot up. “Then why were youÂ
screaming just now? I thought you’d had aÂ
miscarriage!”Â
Her eyes welled up with tears. “I don’t know! ItÂ
really hurt! Sarah was so mean–I thought she wasÂ
going to kill me!”Â
As soon as he heard that name, his brow furrowedÂ
even deeper. “Enough, stop crying. I’ll go seeÂ
Eleanor. Sarah will be there, too. She’ll apologize toÂ
you.”Â
He strode toward the private room and pushedÂ
open the door.Â
A middle–aged man he didn’t know looked up fromÂ
the bed.Â
Alex blinked, took a step back, and grabbed theÂ
arm of a passing nurse. “Where’s the old lady whoÂ
was in this room earlier? Mrs. Eleanor Walker?”Â
The nurse paused. “Oh, are you talking about theÂ
patient who had a stroke a few days ago? She’sÂ
passed away. I’m so sorry.”Â
Alex’s mind went blank. “What? No, that can’t be.Â
She was stable before.”Â
“She was doing fine at first, but then somethingÂ
unexpected happened,” the nurse sighed. “SheÂ
was a good person.”Â
Those words hit Alex like a punch. His fingers.Â
trembled, and his phone fell to the floor: “No…Â
that’s not… it can’t be…”Â
“Alex, are you okay?” Emily walked over gently,Â
reaching out to take his arm. “It’s not your fault; the old lady was sick-”Â
“Stay away from me!” He shoved her hard.Â
Then, as if possessed, he ran out of the hospital.
