The Light I Buried for You Was My Biggest Mistake Chapter 06
Derek’s lips trembled, all the color gone from hisÂ
face. He looked from Ethan to me, then back.Â
“I didn’t know,” he whispered. “I swear, I didn’tÂ
know.”Â
His voice was shaking. “I didn’t know those deals.Â
were from you. I didn’t know Aegis was…”Â
He fell to his knees, begging Ethan, not me.Â
“I didn’t know. I thought… I thought I earned thoseÂ
projects on my own.”Â
His voice cracked. “Lauren never said anything.Â
Not once.”Â
Ethan looked down at him, utterly calm. “She keptÂ
quiet because she wanted you to feel capable.Â
She gave up everything to build you up. And this is how you thanked her?”Â
Derek was shaking all over.Â
He knelt on the ground, hands pressed against theÂ
hot asphalt, head hanging low as his bodyÂ
wracked with sobs. “I was wrong. I was so wrong.”Â
Suddenly, he lunged toward me, crawling on hisÂ
hands and knees. The gravel tore into his palmsÂ
and knees, but he didn’t seem to notice.Â
He crawled to where I stood and reached for myÂ
arm. “Lauren, tell me this isn’t true! Please, tellÂ
me!”Â
I didn’t move.Â
He grabbed my wrist, squeezing hard. “SayÂ
something! Just say something!”Â
I looked down at him and said nothing. Tears cut through the blood and grime on my face.Â
“I never should have treated you that way.”Â
“I didn’t know. I swear I didn’t know you did all that for me. Why didn’t you tell me?”Â
He dropped to the ground and, facing Ethan,Â
started banging his forehead against the loose.Â
stones.Â
Once. Twice. Three times.Â
Blood ran down his face from the gash on hisÂ
brow.Â
“Please, let me go. Foster Holdings has thousandsÂ
of employees. They all depend on that company to support their families. Don’t destroy so many lives.Â
because of one mistake I made.”Â
His voice came out fast and broken, like a franticÂ
prayer.Â
“I’ll give her a divorce. I’ll walk away with nothing.Â
She can have everything I own. Just please, don’tÂ
touch the company. I’ll do anything.”Â
Sophie stared at him, her face shifting from fear toÂ
disbelief.Â
She crouched and tried to pull him up. “Derek, getÂ
- up. You’re a CEO. You can’t grovel on the ground.”Â
Her voice trembled, but she kept it soft. “Don’t beÂ
scared. They won’t really hurt you.”Â
“Shut up!” He shoved her away. “This is your fault!Â
All of it!”Â
He grabbed her by the collar and yanked her close,”Â
his teeth clenched. “If you hadn’t whisperedÂ
poison in my ear every single day, I never wouldÂ
have done any of it!”Â
His voice broke, and fresh tears spilled down hisÂ
cheeks. “I believed your lies. You destroyed me.”Â
Sophie’s hair fell across her face as he shook her.Â
Her collar choked her, and her face turned deepÂ
red. “Derek, let go! You’re hurting me!”Â
“I’m on my knees in this place, begging like a dog,Â
and it’s all because of you!” He slapped her acrossÂ
the face.Â
Sophie crumpled to the ground, her lip split open.Â
Blood dripped down her chin.Â
She clutched her cheek, tears streaming from herÂ
eyes, and let out a shrill cry. “You hit me? You’re hitting me for her?”
