The phone shattered, leaving Derek’s hand numb 

and bloodied. Before he could even curse, three 

helicopters began to descend overhead. 

The live chat went berserk. 

[Are those Aegis Group choppers?] 

[Three of them? He’s in huge trouble.] 

[What did Derek do?] 

Derek froze. Sophie clutched his arm. “Derek, who 

are they?” 

He couldn’t answer. 

The door opened, and a man stepped out, Ethan 

Vance, the head of Aegis Group, Derek’s biggest 

business partner. 

Several of Derek’s core projects depended entirely 

on Aegis. 

Derek had never met him. All their dealings went 

through executives. He’d always thought Ethan 

was just another mysterious billionaire who kept 

his head down. 

He didn’t know Aegis only worked with Foster 

Holdings because of me. 

Ethan walked over and crouched in front of me. He 

scanned my injuries without a word. Then he took 

off his own shirt and gently draped it over my 

shoulders. 

He stood up and faced Derek. 

Derek tried to smile. “This is a family matter. I’m 

sorry you have to see this. Aegis and Foster Holdings have always had a great partnership…” 

“Shut up.” Ethan’s voice was flat. 

Derek’s fake smile vanished. 

Ethan turned to me, his voice low. “This is the man 

you sacrificed everything for?” 

His tone was calm, but I could feel the rage 

underneath. “You bled Shadow Unit dry to prop 

him up. You got him deals, partners, connections.” 

“You gave up your position and handed me the whole organization so you could be his quiet little 

wife.” 

His voice shook. “I want a normal life, you said. ‘A 

husband and kids. I don’t regret it.‘ And this is what 

he gave you?” 

The chat turned completely. 

[Wait… Foster Holdings was built by the wife?] 

[He’s a gold digger.] 

[She paid for everything.] 

Silence fell. Derek’s face went ashen. Those words 

cut deeper than anything physical. 

He thought back to all the deals that appeared out 

of nowhere, the powerful people who were always. 

so polite to him, the projects everyone else fought 

for. 

He thought it was his talent. But it was her, the 

broken woman bleeding on the asphalt. 

Derek swallowed hard as he tried to speak.
