The Last to Know Chapter 07

Chapter 7 Nothing Left to Lose

After apologizing to the hospital director, Fiona hung up with a grim expression. She looked at me with utter disappointment.

*Gavin, I barely recognize you anymore. When did you become so vicious? You actually came up with the idea of having Ms. Sutton fake her death just to frame Oliver.

*And pretending someone died? Weren’t you afraid you’d tempt fate and end up getting your own mother

killed?”

Out of the corner of his eye, Oliver looked at me, his lips curling into the smug smile of a victor.

Sean stood there with his arms crossed, looking just as pleased with himself.

At that moment, it no longer mattered whether I proved Oliver wrong or convinced Fiona to believe me.

There was only one thing I wanted to know. Where was my mother’s body?

Her attending physician, Owen, was a good doctor with integrity. There was no way Oliver or Sean could

have bribed him.

If Owen said my mother had died, then she was truly gone. But the hospital could not find her body.

I glared at Sean and Oliver with every ounce of hatred I had left. If I had still had the strength to stand, I would have dragged them both down with me.

They would not even leave the dead in peace. They had to be the ones who stole my mother’s body. I wanted them to give my mother back.

I grabbed the wooden tissue box from the bedside table and hurled it at Oliver, roaring, “You bastard! My mother’s already gone, and you’re still using her to frame me. You even desecrated her body. Aren’t you afraid you’ll get what you deserve?

My voice broke. “Give my mother back!”

Fiona reacted instantly. She threw up the back of her hand and blocked the wooden box before it could

smash into Oliver’s forehead.

The box was solid wood, with sharp corners. The impact left the back of her hand badly swollen.

She stood protectively in front of Oliver. The last trace of warmth in her eyes disappeared, leaving behind nothing but icy coldness.

“That’s enough, Gavin. Even now, you’re still slandering Oliver. Did you really think I’d believe you?

“For the sake of what we once had, I won’t call the police for what you did to Oliver. But if there’s a next time, I’ll make sure you go to prison.

“As for Ms. Sutton’s medical bills, I’ll keep sending you the money every month. After today, let’s never see each other again. I don’t want my husband getting hurt because of you.”

Oliver frowned slightly. “Honey, you work so hard for your money. I don’t want you paying a stranger’s medical bills.”

Sean chimed in as well. “Fiona, Oliver’s just worried you’re too kind and too easy to fool. Gavin’s mother was never seriously ill. They only kept asking you for money every month because they wanted to squeeze you dry.”

Fiona shot me a conflicted glance before quickly lowering her eyes. “No matter what, we were together for twelve years. He stayed by my side from the very beginning, when I had nothing. Gavin, consider Ms. Sutton’s medical bills my compensation to you. After this, we’ll owe each other nothing.”

The door clicked shut.

I lay alone in the hospital bed, crying one moment and laughing the next.

What was I supposed to do with Fiona’s money? My mother was gone. Her filthy money meant nothing

to me anymore.
