“Nathan, do you know that forging a company seal is illegal?
“But considering what we once had, as long as you get back together with me and return to work obediently, I can pretend the fake seal and fake resignation letter never happened. I can also let the past go. Otherwise, get ready for me to sue you.”
Claire had always been like this.
She trusted Ryan, a man she had known for less than a year, without question. She trusted him so much that she told him her phone password and every company secret, large and small.
Yet she always judged me, her boyfriend of six years, with the worst possible assumptions.
Every document I handed in, she practically wanted to inspect with a magnifying glass, afraid I was hiding some evil intention.
I found it ridiculous.
“Do whatever you want.”
Seeing that neither soft words nor threats worked on me, Claire called HR in a fury.
“HR, contact the lawyers right now. Nathan forged the company seal and faked his resignation. I’m suing him!”
HR sounded confused.
“Faked his resignation? Ms. Whitmore, are you misunderstanding something? Mr. Reed already completed his resignation yesterday.”
“What? He resigned? So his resignation letter is real, and the company seal on it is real too?”
Now it was Claire’s turn to be shocked.
“How could you approve his resignation without my permission? And who allowed you to stamp it on your own?”
Faced with Claire’s questioning, HR replied, “Ms. Whitmore, I asked you for instructions. You approved it.”
Claire denied it at once.
“Nonsense. I never approved anything!
“I get it. Did Nathan give you some kind of benefit so you’d help him?”
HR’s face went pale. She sounded close to tears.
“Ms. Whitmore, I didn’t take any benefit. Yesterday evening, I specifically called you. You told me to handle it myself. You also said the company seal was in the drawer and told me to take it myself…”
Only then did Claire suddenly piece everything together.
Her face turned deathly pale, but she still refused to admit she had done anything wrong. Instead, she snapped at
“Even if I said that, couldn’t you have asked a few more questions about something this important?
“If you can’t even handle a small matter like this, what use are you? You’re fired!”
After hanging up, Claire looked at me carefully.
“Nate, this was all a misunderstanding. I thought it was something unimportant, so I told HR to handle it. If I had known you wanted to resign, I never would have agreed.
“It’s all HR’s fault for not explaining it clearly. That’s why this turned into such a joke. Nate, I never wanted you to resign, so this resignation letter can’t count.”
I laughed coldly in my heart.
In her eyes, no matter how serious my problem was, it was always unimportant.
Once, I had drunk so much at a business dinner that I passed out on the side of the road. Someone called Claire and asked her to pick me up, but she did not take it seriously. She hung up and forgot all about it.
But when Ryan accidentally cut his finger while trimming his nails, Claire paused an important meeting, drove him to the hospital herself, and even booked every specialist there to treat him.
It was painfully clear what mattered to her and what didn’t.
I swept Claire with a cold look.
“Claire, whether it counts is not up to you. My resignation procedure was legal and proper. Legally speaking, I have already left the company.”
When I refused to give her an easy way out again and again, Claire finally grew angry.
“Nathan, are you done? I’m trying to be reasonable here. Why are you still being so ungrateful?
of decent job do you think you can find without me? Besides, as long as I want to, one word from me is acklist you from the entire industry.”
