The Hijacked Marriage Chapter 08
All these years, because Claire said we would need a lot of money after getting married, I had handed over my paycheck to her on time every month and let her manage it as our wedding fund.
I knew it was not easy for Claire to earn money, so I saved wherever I could. I kept using my toothbrush even after the bristles had frayed. I wore socks that cost 3.80 for two pairs, and even when holes appeared, I could not bring myself to throw them away. I patched them up and kept wearing them.
In the end, all the money I had saved went to Ryan and his son.
At first, I thought Claire simply spent a lot, so I did not take it to heart.
But after the day Claire got married to Ryan, the more I thought about it, the more wrong it felt. I went straight to the bank and checked the detailed transaction records.
Only then did I learn that more than half the money in the account had been spent by Claire on Ryan and Noah.
A three-hundred-thousand-dollar watch. A million-dollar supercar. Toys that cost thousands without a second thought.
Claire bought them everything without even blinking.
Meanwhile, I had been trying to split every dollar in half.
Thinking about it now, I had been beyond stupid.
Once I posted the screenshot, public opinion flipped instantly. The people who had been attacking me moments ago turned their fire on Claire and Ryan.
“This woman is something else. She’s using her boyfriend’s money to support another man and his kid?”
“This guy is miserable. He worked so hard, got nothing out of it, and still got smeared.”
“A cheater and a leech. Perfect match. Please stay together forever and don’t get back into the dating pool to ruin anyone else.”
Faced with everyone’s comments, Claire’s face turned red all the way down to her neck.
She looked at me coldly, her tone full of blame.
“Nathan, you really are petty. You’re seriously going to argue with me over this little bit of money?”
A little bit of money?
Over the years, she had spent a total of 1.5 million on Ryan and Noah. Every cent of that was money I had worked hard to save, bit by bit.
And she called it a little bit of money?
Usually, if I asked her to pick up a pack of instant noodles for me on her way home, she would make sure to count those three dollars against me.
Back then, I had thought that was just some little thing couples did.
Now I finally understood.
Because she did not love me, she had kept every account with me perfectly clear.
Thinking of that, I took a deep breath and said coldly, “Claire, we’ve already broken up. We’re strangers now. Of course, we need to settle everything clearly.”
Only then did Claire realize I was serious. Her face darkened, and she tried to threaten me with my job.
“Nathan, dotr’t forget your job is still in my hands. If you insist on breaking up with ine, then don’t blame me for firing you without mercy.”
Ryan’s eyes filled with smugness, but he still pretended to be the good guy.
“Nathan, jobs aren’t easy to find these days. Maybe you should just soften up and apologize to Claire.”
I could not be bothered with him. I only looked at Claire and laughed coldly.
“Claire, I resigned yesterday. Didn’t you know?”
Claire froze for only a moment before denying it at once.
“Resignation requires my stamp and approval. I never received your resignation letter yesterday, and I never stamped it. How could you possibly have resigned?
“Nathan, is this another one of your little games?”
I smiled slightly and pulled out the stamped resignation letter.
“Why don’t you look at this before you say that?”
Claire stared at it in disbelief.
“How do you have this?”
Before I could speak, Ryan said beside her, casually but deliberately, “Nathan, no matter how angry you are, you shouldn’t joke around with your job. Forging a resignation letter just to upset Claire is going too far.”
Claire’s eyes immediately blazed as she looked at me and snapped, “So the resignation letter is fake. Does that mean the company seal on it is fake, too?”
