The Heir He Needed, the Wife He Betrayed Chapter 05
Cole suddenly slammed his fist into the bathroom’s glass door.
A deafening crack exploded through the room, and blood ran down his fingers.
“That’s why I kept my promise all these years and loved only you.”
His voice broke, as if he felt wronged beyond belief. “Even Madison…”
“I kept her hidden from you because I was terrified you would find out and get hurt.”
“I’ve already bent over backward for you and swallowed my pride, but you still throw up in front of me every single day.”
“Do you have any idea how hard it’s been for me to endure these past three years?”
“Cole, how long have you been hiding these thoughts from me?”
I smiled miserably. “So I’m not the only one who has felt wronged all these years. You have too.”
Then why not divorce me?
Why come back and try to win me over, only to keep lying to me?
Why watch me suffer with such cold eyes?
“Evelyn, I’m sorry…”
Cole seemed to snap back to his senses at once. “I… I was drinking. I was talking nonsense.”
Ignoring the injury on his hand, he hurried to explain. “I didn’t mean any of that.”
I gently lifted his bleeding hand.
I looked at the torn flesh and the crisscrossing wounds on his skin, feeling utterly bewildered. “Cole, do you still love me or not?”
As he looked into my indifferent eyes, his hands trembled in panic.
“Evelyn, I love you.”
“I really do love you.”
He repeated it again and again, as if he were trying to hypnotize himself.
But Madison could not wait any longer, and she sent me another message.
Madison Wells: [Cole should be home by now, right?]
Madison Wells: [Let’s make a bet.]
Madison Wells: [I bet he’ll come running back to me any minute now.]
Cole’s phone suddenly vibrated.
He looked down at the screen, and his expression changed drastically.
“Evelyn, there’s an emergency at the company. I have to go handle it myself.”
My eyes reddened as I gave him one final hint.
“Is it the New York office again?”
“Can you please not go?”
Cole looked impatient. “Evelyn, do you think I want to go?”
“I deal with pressure from the board and market volatility every single day. I’m already exhausted.”
“You don’t understand any of this, so stop making things harder for me.”
He strode toward the door. I hurried after him and grabbed his wrist tightly.
“At least let me bandage your hand first, okay?”
I really was such a considerate wife.
I knew my husband had betrayed me, and I knew he was rushing off to another woman.
Yet I was still pathetic enough to worry about his wound.
Someday, when Cole suddenly remembered this moment, his heart would probably ache.
“Evelyn, stop making a scene.”
Cole shook off my hand hard and walked away without looking back. “Be reasonable. Don’t make me even more annoyed.”
He did not see me fall heavily to the floor.
A stream of blood slowly wound its way down between my legs.
The camera on the ceiling silently recorded everything.
I reached after him in vain and called his name again and again.
“Cole… Cole…”
I clutched my lower belly and called him with trembling hands.
But he rejected my calls over and over again.
“The baby… my baby…”
“Someone, please save my baby.”
I began sobbing out loud.
I cried for the three years he had stolen from me for nothing.
I cried because I had loved the wrong person and trusted the wrong person.
I had to pay for my own stupidity.
But Cole, you had to suffer with me.
An ambulance took me away.
The baby did not survive.
I refused to stay in the hospital and insisted on going home.
I projected the intimate videos Madison had sent me onto the giant screen in the living room and set them to play on a loop.
Then I spread the pregnancy test result, the divorce agreement, the miscarriage report, and all of Madison’s taunting messages across the coffee table.
Each one was like a poisoned blade.
First, they had cut into my flesh. Now it was his turn to hurt.
After finishing all of that, I picked up my suitcase and gently shut the door behind me.
This time, Cole did not come after me.
