The Heir He Needed, the Wife He Betrayed Chapter 04
Madison sent me another video.
In the footage, Cole was half-kneeling in front of the couch.
His hand gently stroked the woman’s still-flat belly.
Then he suddenly turned his head and bent down, pressing his ear against her stomach.
“It’s too early. The baby can’t be moving yet.”
The woman’s coy voice rang out. “Do you love children that much?”
“I do.” Cole lowered his voice, his eyes glimmering. “I hope this one is a girl.”
The child playing with blocks on the floor immediately lifted his face and said in a soft, childish voice, “Daddy, it’s a baby sister.”
Cole laughed, picked him up, and planted a big kiss on him.
“From your lips to God’s ears, buddy.”
“Let Mommy give you a baby sister.”
“You and Daddy will protect her together, okay?”
As he spoke, he lowered his head and kissed Madison’s belly.
To anyone else, it would have looked like a beautiful picture of a loving family.
Madison Wells: [Miss Vale, you may not know this yet.]
Madison Wells: [Cole told me at first that once the baby was born, he would bring the child home for you to raise.]
Madison Wells: [But now, he’s keeping both children with me.]
Madison Wells: [After all this, do you still not understand where his heart is?]
Of course I knew.
Cole had once cried as he confessed to me, “Evelyn, I don’t love her.”
“I chose her only because she looks a lot like you.”
“I wanted a child who looked like both you and me, and then I wanted to bring the baby home for you to raise.”
That was so disgusting.
But that day, when I stood outside the house in New York and saw that two-year-old child, the first thing that surged through me was hurt.
Hadn’t he promised to bring the child home for me to raise?
Why had even that promise changed?
“Do you have anything you want to tell me?”
After Cole came home, I still asked him that.
I knew he would not tell me the truth.
But I wanted that question to become a thorn lodged in his heart.
Someday, when he remembered it, that thorn would turn into the cruelest punishment.
…
“Babe, why have you been acting so strange today?”
Cole looked confused, but he smiled and wrapped an arm around my waist.
“Weren’t you the one who said you had something to tell me?”
Almost the instant his chin touched my shoulder, an indescribable wave of nausea rose in my throat.
I shoved him away and stumbled into the bathroom.
Cole’s expression darkened at once.
He leaned against the doorframe and watched coldly as I doubled over the sink, dry-heaving violently.
“Evelyn, I’ve had enough of this!”
“Why can’t you ever get past what happened?”
“Men in our circle all fool around. They keep women on the side right out in the open.”
There was no longer a trace of tenderness or guilt on his face.
“I’m almost thirty, and you still haven’t been able to get pregnant.”
“I just want a child of my own.”
“Why can’t you try to understand me?”
My whole body turned cold. Trembling, I shouted, “Cole, don’t you dare forget this.”
“My uterus was injured because I took a knife for you!”
“Anyone in this world can blame me for not being able to get pregnant, but you are the one person who never gets to do that!”
