The Game Character I Raised Was a Powerful Dynasty Heir Chapter 05
I stared at the ring in my hand for a long time, and William’s face kept popping into my mind.
Could it be… that he really was the character I controlled in the game?
The moment the thought crossed my mind, I quickly shook my head.
The next day, I went out as usual to buy groceries.
To my surprise, Chloe was actually waiting for me right outside my building.
As soon as she saw me, she came over and held out her hand, waving it in front of me—and there, clearly visible, was a sapphire ring.
“What do you think? Pretty, isn’t it?” She shot me a smug glance. “William gave this to me. He said I’m the only one worthy of wearing this ring. Stop daydreaming, sis. There’s no way William would ever be interested in you.”
“You’d better just go ahead and marry that Mr. Walker. He might even think you’re too old.”
I didn’t say anything; I just lowered my eyes.
William really wasn’t Lil’ Beggar.
The ring thing was just a coincidence.
The consequences of rejecting the mining magnate’s marriage proposal soon followed.
My parents cut off all my living expenses and had someone throw my belongings out of the house.
I stood at the Lynn family’s front door, staring expressionlessly at the luggage strewn all over the ground.
My grandparents were heartbroken when they heard the news.
My grandmother said over the phone, “Nina, why don’t you come live with us? We can’t do much to help you, but at least you’ll have a hot meal to eat.”
“Grandma, it’s okay.” I politely rejected. “I’ve already found a place to live, so you and Grandpa don’t need to worry.”
My grandmother sighed on the other end of the line, paused for a moment, and then said, “Then you absolutely must come to my birthday party next month. I miss you.”
“Okay. I’ll definitely be there, and I’ll bring you a gift.”
On my grandmother’s birthday, I carefully picked out a gift, got all dressed up, and headed to the old house.
The banquet was bustling with people, and quite a few relatives gave me strange looks when they saw me.
I knew what they were thinking—they were just out to have a laugh.
In their eyes, maybe a once-wealthy heiress who had been jilted, kicked out of her family home, and reduced to living in a rented apartment was a complete failure.
I couldn’t be bothered with all those phony smiles, so I found a corner to sit in and pulled out my phone to farm materials for my game character.
I was halfway through when someone sat down next to me.
It was my mother.
“Nina.” Her voice was unexpectedly gentle, a complete contrast to how she had sounded before. “What are you doing?”
I gave her a wary look and said nothing.
She didn’t seem to mind my coldness; a smile still played on her face. “Actually, your dad acted too impulsively that day, and I had no choice but to do what I did. Don’t blame us—after all, we’re family. Isn’t there anything we can’t talk through calmly?”
I eyed her skeptically, feeling that something just wasn’t quite right. “What about the matter with Mr. Walker?” I asked tentatively.
“That matter is now settled.” My mother waved her hand. “I won’t pressure you anymore. Today is your grandmother’s birthday, and I just want you to come home for a nice meal so we can all be together as a family.”
I stared at her for a few seconds but couldn’t detect any telltale signs on her face.
“Here, take the wine. In a little while, you’ll raise a toast to your grandparents. Don’t let anyone say our child has no manners.” My mother brought a wine glass from somewhere and handed it to me.
Without a second thought, I took the glass and obediently went to the head table to toast my grandparents.
Amid the crowd’s cheers, I drank up my glass.
I had planned to wait a little while, cut the cake, and then leave.
But as soon as I returned to my corner, I gradually began to feel that something was wrong.
The screen in front of me began to blur, and my body grew weak and limp; I barely had the strength left to lift a finger.
I looked up suddenly, searching for my mother, only to find her standing a few steps away, staring at me coldly, with a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
She gave a nod to the two men standing nearby.
The two men immediately came over and took hold of my arms, one on each side. “Miss Lynn has had a bit too much to drink. Let’s help her go rest for a while.”
No… I wasn’t drunk…
I struggled to call out, but the sound that came from my throat was so faint it was almost inaudible, as if something were blocking it.
The guests around them were clinking glasses and laughing merrily; no one noticed what was happening in the corner.
The phone slipped through my loosened fingers and clattered to the ground, screen-side up.
The game screen was still showing the character’s stats screen.
He sat there quietly, his eyes shining brightly, as if he were waiting for me to come back.
My consciousness began to fade, and the scene before me gradually grew dim.
Just as I was being dragged away, a slender, clean hand reached out and picked up the phone.
