The Floating Comments Showed Me His Real Feelings Chapter 02

My phone buzzed relentlessly, dragging me out of sleep.

I squinted at the screen. My blood went cold.

That post, the one about Callum dumping me for Sienna, was trending again.

Callum’s best friend, Nolan Mercer, had liked it. And Sienna had posted a response. She was only back to handle some personal business, and it had nothing to do with anyone in particular.

That only poured gasoline on the fire. The comments went feral.

[Sienna obviously came back FOR him. That post was to get under his skin for dating someone else this long, right??]

[They want each other SO bad but can’t admit it. This push-and-pull is EVERYTHING. Maren just gets way too much screen time. She’s unbearable.]

[It’s fine. She’s definitely gonna lose it when she sees this. Once she starts making a scene and demanding answers, Callum will get sick of her. And every fight will just remind him who he actually wants.]

[When you put it like that, she’s kinda useful lol. I guess I can stand her for a few more episodes.]

[Honestly, I just hate her now. It’ll make her downfall hit even harder. Isn’t that its own kind of karma?]

[Ngl I’m starting to feel kinda bad… she’s gonna get iced out and bullied, right? She hasn’t actually done anything THAT terrible, has she?]

My stomach dropped.

I’d always known what people said behind my back, that I wasn’t good enough for Callum.

But I never let it slide. I’d go after anyone who talked shit until they backed down. And Callum always let me.

But now I had to wonder. Was his silence actually just him agreeing with them?

He could let them come for me. He could even join in, all for her.

A chill crawled up my spine.

I loved Callum. But I wasn’t going to let myself become collateral damage.

“Hey, did I wake you? I was trying to be quiet.”

Callum stepped out of the bathroom still damp, a towel slung low around his hips. Water trailed down his abs and disappeared under the fabric. The cool air followed him in.

“Maren?” His voice was rough. He came closer, and the chill rolling off his skin sharpened every nerve in my body.

“Did you look at my phone?”

His phone screen was lit up on the nightstand. A new message. From Sienna.

“Maren.”

There it was again, my name, rolling off his tongue so easily tonight. Funny how he saved that same softness for Sienna every other day.

Nine months. He never liked me. Not once.

It didn’t matter. We were done anyway.

“I didn’t look.” My voice came out flat.

I heard him exhale—barely disguised relief—and then he moved closer.

His mind was full of someone else, but his body still had a part to play?

Was he that scared I’d go off-script and ruin their perfect little love story?

I couldn’t breathe. I rolled away again.

He felt me pull away and sighed.

“You…” A pause. “Forget it. Just get some sleep.”

Fine. Fine. Fine. He couldn’t even be bothered to pretend anymore.

I bit down on the inside of my cheek, unlocked my phone, and booked a moving service for the morning.
