The Doctor Who Learned Love Too Late Chapter 08
The theater investor suddenly pulled funding.Â
Ivy said the money in the account wouldn’t lastÂ
past next month.Â
She said the theater would probably have to shutÂ
down.Â
Everyone’s mood sank.Â
Ivy said everyone looked too depressed, so sheÂ
would take us out to dinner.Â
In the end, she cried harder than anyone.Â
I tried to comfort her, but she threw herselfÂ
against me and knocked me to the floor.Â
A dull pain shot up from my leg bone.Â
In the chaos, a male actor named Ethan GrayÂ
helped me up.Â
“I haven’t been drinking. I’ll take you to theÂ
hospital.”Â
It was already midnight when we got there.Â
For some reason, Landon suddenly appeared,Â
travel–worn as he walked in. His gaze landedÂ
directly on my cast.Â
“What happened? Where did you hit it? Does itÂ
hurt?”Â
The doctor on duty beside him coughed.Â
“Dr. Landon,” the doctor said with an awkwardÂ
smile, “we just took the X–ray. The results aren’t out yet.”Â
“I’ll get them.”Â
Landon froze for a second, then turned and leftÂ
again.Â
The doctor glanced at me and scratched his head.Â
“Well, Dr. Landon comes by every few days to askÂ
about your condition, so everyone in ourÂ
department knows you now.”Â
“Someone just said they saw you in the ER. IÂ
guess someone told him.”Â
Just then, Ethan suddenly picked up my hand, histÂ
face full of concern.Â
“Your hand’s hurt too.”Â
A small patch of skin had scraped off near theÂ
base of my palm.Â
My leg had hurt too much earlier, so I hadn’tÂ
noticed.Â
“It’s fine. I’ll wash it later.”Â
“That’s not fine. A small injury is still an injury.Â
Can’t you feel pain?”Â
He asked the doctor, “Can you treat this?”Â
I froze.Â
The doctor froze too, then pointed toward theÂ
door.Â
“There’s iodine at the nurses‘ station outside.”Â
Landon stood in the doorway holding the X–rayÂ
films.Â
I didn’t know how long he had been there.Â
The doctor on duty looked at him, then at me andÂ
Ethan, and cleared his throat awkwardly.Â
Landon handed over the films.Â
“It’s fine. The bone is okay. But you still need to beÂ
careful. Don’t fall again.”Â
Then he went out.Â
When he came back in, he was holding iodine andÂ
a pack of cotton swabs.Â
I moved away from him and said coldly, “No need.Â
A little scrape doesn’t require an orthopedicÂ
surgeon. I won’t trouble you.”Â
Panic flashed in Landon’s eyes.Â
“You’re not troubling me.”Â
“But right now, you’re troubling me.”Â
“Landon, can you stop showing up out of nowhereÂ
and causing me trouble?”Â
Landon froze.Â
I pulled Ethan with me and left.Â
A few days later, Ivy came to me with aÂ
complicated look on her face.Â
“Someone wants to invest in our theater. A hugeÂ
amount. Enough for a national tour and enough toÂ
keep us alive for years.”Â
She bared her teeth in an awkward smile.Â
“But that person is Landon.”Â
I froze.Â
“I didn’t expect him to be that rich.”Â
“His family is rich, but he didn’t want to inherit the family business. He cut ties with them in college. I don’t know where the money came from.”Â
Ivy coughed.Â
“So, dinner tonight? He said he wants to talk about the script.”Â
I sighed with a headache.Â
“Fine.”Â
All through dinner, Landon kept putting food on my plate.Â
He removed fish bones for me. He served meÂ
soup.Â
I pushed him away impatiently.Â
“Enough. My hands aren’t broken. I don’t need your help.”Â
He paused.Â
“I wanted to…”Â
“I don’t want it.”Â
His hand stopped in midair, then slowly withdrew.Â
I couldn’t stand seeing him look wronged, so 1 asked, “Where did you get that much money?Â
“You don’t need to worry about it. Just work onÂ
your play.”Â
“I watched the trial performance. The script you wrote this time is very similar to an early idea you wrote two years ago. You must really like it.”Â
He was very serious.Â
“So I hope it gets performed.”Â
I lowered my head.Â
“I won’t be grateful to you because of this.”Â
“I know.”Â
With the theater crisis solved, everything returnedÂ
to its old rhythm.Â
Rehearsals, group dinners, rest, then rehearsalsÂ
again.Â
On the day my cast came off, Ethan went to theÂ
hospital with me.Â
When we reached the entrance, I saw Landon.Â
“Landon, didn’t I tell you not to think you canÂ
bother me just because you invested?”Â
He went silent.Â
“That’s not what I meant.”Â
“Then what do you mean by showing up in front ofÂ
me again and again?”Â
I tilted my head.Â
“Are you never going to stop?”Â
Ethan said, “You two talk. I’ll go register first.”Â
Landon pressed his lips together.Â
“Is that man pursuing you?”Â
I didn’t speak, so he asked again.Â
“Is that a question that crosses a boundary?”Â
“If it is, I apologize. But I’m really worried.”Â
“When I think about you being with someone else,Â
I feel awful. So I really care.”Â
I looked at him like I was looking at a stalker.Â
“That has nothing to do with me. That’s yourÂ
problem. Handle it yourself and stop botheringÂ
me.”Â
His face gradually turned pale.Â
At that moment, Ethan came back and naturallyÂ
supported me.Â
I said, “Let’s go. This place has bad energy.”Â
Ethan laughed.Â
As we turned the corner, I looked back for reasonsÂ
I couldn’t explain.Â
Landon stood where he was.Â
His shadow stretched long across the floor.Â
I didn’t know when it had started, but he had beenÂ
left behind me for a long time.Â
And he had been watching my back the wholeÂ
time.
