The Broken & Reborn Mafia Matriarch Chapter 08
“The burns on your lower limbs were too severe. We had to amputate to save your life.”Â
“I’ve already reviewed the security footage and found the fire was arson. Don’t worry, I’ll help you get to the bottom of this!”Â
Audrey rushed to the hospital. Even with decades of bloody experience running the Thompson crime family, Audrey still staggered and blacked out at the sight of Eric’s mangled body.Â
I handed the security footage I’d obtained to Audrey.Â
The footage captured a bald man ducking under my car, dousing it in gasoline, striking a match, then slipping away.Â
He must have spotted the headlights and figured someone remained inside the vehicle.Â
When I saw the man at the police station, heÂ
looked extremely familiar.Â
Who did he remind me of?Â
A face popped into my head.Â
The man bore an uncanny resemblance to Zoe.Â
Zoe’s father had just been released from prisonÂ
recently.Â
I remembered what Zoe had said to me earlier.Â
This must have been Zoe’s doing.Â
But when the police questioned Zoe’s father, heÂ
took full responsibility and completely cleared ZoeÂ
of any involvement.Â
However, Audrey had no intention of letting him.Â
- go. Zoe’s father disappeared a few days later.Â
In the hospital, I told Eric the whole truth.Â
Eric thrashed wildly, slamming his useless lowerÂ
limbs in agony, letting out a heartbreaking wail.Â
“So this is what it feels like to be crippled. I’mÂ
sorry, Mia. I was such an idiot before.”Â
I said nothing, just left him alone in the ward.Â
I had no desire to talk about the past anymore.Â
Aiden had already divorced Zoe, and the CollinsÂ
family had taken full custody of their two children.Â
After Zoe’s father set the fire, I banished Aria and Zoe from the Campbell estate for good.Â
I wasn’t about to keep supporting people whoÂ
wanted to kill me.Â
Just when I thought everything was finally over,Â
Zoe suddenly appeared on my way home fromÂ
work, holding a knife in her hand.Â
She charged straight at me. Before I could react,Â
disaster struck.Â
A car slammed into Zoe at full speed, sending herÂ
flying across the road brutally.Â
When I ran downstairs, Eric opened the car doorÂ
and smiled at me.Â
The wind carried his voice to me.Â
He pointed to his wrist.Â
“When we were kids, I drowned in the backyardÂ
pool. You were the one who saved me, weren’tÂ
you?”Â
“I always thought it was Zoe. I was her servant forÂ
so many years. But thinking about it now, she’s soÂ
cruel and vicious. How could she ever have savedÂ
me?”Â
“It was you who saved me, but all I ever did wasÂ
hurt you. Let me protect you just one last time.”Â
It all came flooding back to me.Â
When we were little, we went swimming at the pool. Eric couldn’t swim well and almost drowned. I grabbed his hand and wouldn’t let go, so I saved his life. I got a scar on my wrist from pulling himÂ
out.Â
My mother’s bracelet had fallen off when I pulled Eric out of the burning car, exposing that scar.Â
I never thought Eric would recognize it.Â
He had run Zoe over to stop her from hurting meÂ
again.Â
When the police arrived, he didn’t resist at all.Â
“Mia, I owe you this life. Don’t be sad for me…”Â
Later, I learned that Zoe had died in the hospital despite all efforts to save her.Â
Eric was sentenced to death for intentionalÂ
homicide.Â
Lila’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts.Â
“Ms. Campbell, all the clothes for this fashion show are here. Would you like to take a look?”Â
After escaping that failed marriage, it seemed likeÂ
God was making it up to me.Â
My career went from strength to strength., and myÂ
fashion brand blew up into a nationwide staple.
