The Bride Isn’t Me, So I’m Calling Off the Wedding Chapter 03

After staring at me for several seconds, Jason Miller sneered.

“Break up? Just because I didn’t give you a wedding?”

“Natalie, I really spoiled you, and that’s why you’ve become so petty. You need to know when jealousy is appropriate. If there were anything between her and me, we would’ve gotten together long ago. Why would we have waited until now?”

“She is prettier than you, and more likable, too. These days, I barely recognize you.”

I was stunned for a long time after hearing that.

I still remembered how, on a snowy night when I was twenty, Jason Miller had held my face in his hands and told me I was the best girl in the world.

Yet at twenty-five, he said I was a stranger and that I was petty.

Which one of us had changed?

Suddenly exhausted, I demanded through reddened eyes.

“What about me? Was I just supposed to never get a wedding?”

“Was I just supposed to let you and her deceive me over and over?”

Jason Miller didn’t answer. His gaze drifted to my pale face, and he lowered his eyes before taking me home.

Then, with practiced ease, he took my medication from the medicine cabinet, poured me a glass of hot water, and coaxed me.

“Take your medicine first.”

Staring at the steaming glass, I suddenly realized something.

Every time we argued, Jason Miller would bring me a glass of water.

I had thought that was his way of admitting he was wrong.

Only now did I understand that he simply couldn’t be bothered to respond to me. He was betting that once I took the glass, I would soften and forgive him.

I didn’t take the glass of water the way Jason Miller expected me to.

Jason Miller’s brow furrowed, and he spoke through barely restrained anger.

“How much longer are you going to keep this up?”

I moved my lips and was just about to speak when Claire Shaw’s anguished sobs suddenly rang out from inside the house.

Jason Miller’s expression changed. He immediately dropped the medicine and glass in his hands and rushed inside.

Clutching my stomach, I followed as best I could to see what was happening.

Claire Shaw was curled up in the corner of the couch, trembling all over as tears streamed down her face. She was gasping for breath, clearly in the throes of an acute depressive episode.

Jason Miller pulled her firmly into his arms, scooped her up, and rushed outside.

As he passed me, Jason Miller said in a low voice, reproach coloring his tone.

“We were arguing outside just now, and the noise upset her. She’s in very bad shape, so I have to take her to the hospital. If your stomach is acting up, take a cab to the doctor yourself.”

Natalie’s parents rushed in right behind him, busy soothing the trembling Claire Shaw. When they looked back at me, their eyes were full of helplessness.

“Natalie, why did you have to argue over this right now? Look, you’ve upset her again.”

The front door slammed shut.

In the enormous house, I was suddenly alone. Waves of cramping pain seized my stomach, and I weakly curled up on the floor.

When the pain eased a little, I picked up my phone and made a call.

“Supervisor, I’m resigning.”
