“I’m sorry. I should’ve taken this secret to my grave.
“But someone needed to know what Elliot did.
“Please… avenge my child.”
I never told Walter the rest.
The rest of my child’s ashes had been eaten by stray dogs.
Piper gave the order without knowing the truth.
Walter had already heard enough.
“I’m sorry, Marco! My family failed you! I was blind… I couldn’t protect you!”
In my final moments, I saw Walter’s bloodshot eyes.
The old man collapsed to the floor and started slapping himself over and over.

“I don’t want her at my funeral.
“Can you do that for me?”
My voice was barely a whisper.
With my last breath, my eyes finally closed.

As my consciousness slipped away, I thought I heard my baby’s voice.
“Daddy, don’t cry.”
Tears ran down my face.

Piper rushed in, eyes bloodshot. She shoved the doctor aside and grabbed my cooling hand.
“You’re faking, right? You hate me, so this is how you’re punishing me.
“Right?”
Her voice shook hard.
She tried to pull me into her arms, but a nurse stopped her
“Ms. Carlson, please calm down. Mr. Mercer has already-
“Get away!”
Piper screamed like she’d lost it, pure obsession twisting her face.
“He’s not dead! He’s just asleep!
“Marco, get up! Hit me! Scream at me!
“I’ll give you my life! I’ll give you your kidney back!”
Again and again, she stroked my face, trying to warm my cold, lifeless skin.
Her tears mixed with the blood running down her forehead, dripping onto my pale face.
“Say something!
“Tell me that kidney was yours! I believe you! I believe all of it now!
“Please… just say it one more time…”
Seeing her unravel, Walter closed his eyes.
He quietly raised a hand.
The bodyguards stepped forward and pulled Piper away from my body.
“Ma’am, please let him rest in peace.”
“No!”
She fought them with everything she had.
“Let me go! Who said you could touch him? He’s not dead!“”
She struggled like a trapped animal, her clothes a mess, every trace of composure gone.
It took four bodyguards to drag her into a corner and hold her down.
The doctor stepped forward and checked me one last time.
Then he slowly pulled off his mask and shook his head at Walter.
“Mr. Carlson, we did everything we could. Mr. Mercer had been severely malnourished for a long time and had several untreated injuries. His organs were failing, especially his kidney.
“The fact that he held on this long was already a miracle.
“Our condolences”
Every word cut straight through Piper.
She stopped fighting.
Just stood there, frozen, eyes blank.
Organ failure… untreated injuries…”
She repeated the words like they didn’t make sense.
Walter stumbled forward, tears running down his weathered face.
His trembling hand gently brushed the hair from my forehead.

“You suffered so much…”
The room went silent.
Then an assistant burst through the door, out of breath but beaming with hope.
“Ms. Carlson! We found one! We found a matching donor kidney! The match just came through! He can go into surgery right now!”
