I suddenly felt my heart, which had lain dormant for so long, spring back to life. I reached for Raven’s hand and held it gently, saying, “Thank you, Raven. Thank you for standing by me when my life was at its
lowest.”
Raven nestled into my embrace and said, “I made you a promise a long time ago-that I would come back for you. I’m sorry for coming too late and letting you go through all that pain, Christian.”
I never expected Abigail to actually follow us on our honeymoon. She would wait along the path back to my hotel every single day, holding a bouquet of flowers with the stamens carefully snipped off and carrying an exquisite gift.
Abigail’s eyes would always well with tears the moment she saw me. “I’ve realized my mistake now, Christian, so please come back to me. I’ve missed you so much while you’ve been away.
“I swear I’ll never do anything to hurt you like that again. I’ve already kicked Ethan and Owen out, so please come back to my side. I can’t live without you, Christian!”
I sneered as I walked over to her. I then leaned close to her and whispered, “Do you know what Dad told me right before he died? He said he wouldn’t be my burden anymore and told me to leave you and find my own happiness. I actually stopped loving you the second you fell for Ethan and Owen, Abigail.
“I only endured being with you so that Dad could live out his days in peace. It was you who killed Dad. It was you who pushed me away with your own hands. You destroyed Sparky and everything I cared about for the sake of Ethan and Owen. Do you honestly think I’d ever come back to you, Abigail?”
Abigail turned pale, shaking her head repeatedly. “It’s not like that. I never intended to cause Dad’s death.”
I glared at her with bloodshot eyes and bellowed, “You don’t have the right to call him Dad!”
I then rolled up my sleeve to show her the hideous scar beneath. “If Dad knew I married someone who almost cost me my life, he would never forgive you, Abigail.”
Abigail couldn’t bear to look at the scars on my arm. She took several unsteady steps backward and said, “I’m sorry. I told the bodyguards to go in and rescue you back then. I didn’t know you would be injured.”
I smirked faintly and said, “Your apology is completely useless to me, Abigail. I’m going to hold you accountable for every single ounce of pain you inflicted on me.”
Abigail didn’t dare approach me to talk anymore after that day, choosing instead to follow silently behind Raven and me every single day.
Raven would sometimes lose her patience completely and send the bodyguards over to rough her up, but Abigail seemed completely oblivious to the pain, just letting the blows rain down on her.
She would wander over to me afterward, looking entirely hollowed out. “Does it make you feel better to see me in such a state, Christian?”
I held Raven’s hand and turned to walk away, refusing to waste another breath on her
I officially took over as the marketing director at Sherman Group once our honeymoon was over. I had no other goal than to aggressively steal Southall Group’s market share across the country. If Abigail was bidding on a project, I was determined to beat her to it.
In just three months, I managed to steal dozens of deals from Southall Group. Abigail, on the other hand, was so tied down by Ethan and Owen that she couldn’t even attend to the company’s affairs, which caused Southall Group’s financial situation to go into a steady downward spiral.
Mr. and Mrs. Southall couldn’t take it anymore and came to Sherman Group to see me in person. They had always acted superior to me, yet now they were completely subservient.
“We used to be family, Christian. You see, Abigail simply committed an error that anyone might make- she genuinely loves you. Please spare Southall Group and stop driving us into the ground, Christian.”
I let out a mocking laugh and said, “You ought to know that there’s no room for sentimentality in business, Mr. and Mrs. Southall. Isn’t that exactly what you told me when I married into the Southall family, and you handed me that voluntary asset waiver agreement?
“You told me that it was how businesspeople dealt with such matters, so I’m only doing the same now. You can surely understand me from your perspective as people who have experienced this, right?”
