My Wife Took My Kidney Chapter 06

My Wife Took My Kidney Chapter 06

Even when Gavin died, Audrey did not have much of a reaction. She simply nodded to the person who informed

her.

She was desperately trying to find my body. But what difference would it make even if she found it?

She rummaged through the entire house before she finally found Miranda’s phone number.

When the call went through, Audrey asked anxiously, “Where’s Jasper?”

Miranda seemed much calmer. She neither lashed out with harsh words nor interrogated Audrey. She smiled helplessly.

“I thought you’d never think of Jasper for the rest of your life. You were too busy tending to your precious lover. guess Jasper’s death finally knocked some sense into you, huh?”

Audrey ignored her words and just repeated her question.

Miranda said coldly, “If you’re so capable, come find him yourself. But honestly, I don’t think Jasper would want to see you.”

She was right. I did not want to see Audrey.

She did not care whether I lived or died. She never trusted me, not even once. What was there left to see? If she showed up at my grave, she would only desecrate the one place I could finally have peace.

After Miranda hung up, Audrey broke down. She threw her phone on the floor, and it shattered into pieces. She squatted down and grabbed her own hair.

She looked deeply mournful.

Was it guilt?

Was it regret?

Was it grief?

None of that meant anything to me anymore. I had given Audrey so many chances. I thought she loved me. That was why I gave her everything I had without hesitation.

But reality had hit me hard.

It reminded me of the first time we had met.

Audrey and I chose each other. Back then, I did not know she was the daughter of the Kates family. She also did not know I was the adopted son of the Wenzel family. We did not meet during our school years.

At that time, I had just graduated and was out with friends when I suddenly needed to use the washroom. So, I ran to a coffee shop. But the waiter told me only paying customers could use the facilities. With no other choice, I decided to buy a cup of coffee.

But the line was very long. Audrey happened to be first in line. She looked back at me and said, “Babe, what took you so long? Go ahead and use the restroom. I’ve got the bill.”

She looked beautiful in the white dress she was wearing back then. She looked tall and slim. It was hard not to be charmed by her.

I knew Audrey was just being nice to save me some embarrassment. So, I took the hint and went to the washroom

When I came back out, Audrey was still there. She was holding the latte I had just ordered.

When I was about to transfer the money to her, she did not accept it. She told me to treat her to a meal instead.

At that time, I thought to myself that a meal was much more expensive than a cup of coffee. Audrey certainly knew how to do the math.

But I could not refuse since she had helped me. Even if it was just to return the favor, I had to treat her to a meal.

A week later, I chose a restaurant. It turned out it was one of the properties owned by Audrey’s family. So, of course, I did not end up paying. From then on, our relationship progressed further.

Audrey never mentioned Gavin to me. I thought we had fallen for each other at first sight. We got along. After haf a year of dating, we got married.

But after we were married, Gavin came back. I noticed something off between them from the very beginning. Gavin’s provocations became gradually obvious.

My soul seemed to become increasingly transparent.

In the days that followed, Audrey quit her job. She stayed home drinking all day. The floor was covered in empty bottles.

The smell drove me away, but I wanted to stay. I wanted to see how Audrey would live without me.

During the rare moments when she was sober, she carefully scrubbed the dishes and cooked the food I used to like. She set out two sets of utensils. I sat quietly across from her.

I found that amusing. In five years of our relationship, she had never cooked for me once. She only started making up for it when I did not need it anymore.

She was just crying over spilled milk at this point. It was too late.

She stared at the empty seat across from her and began talking to herself.

“You know, the first time I saw you, you reminded me of Gavin. He hurt me so badly, but I just couldn’t forget

him.

“As time went on, I realized you and Gavin were two different individuals. I started getting confused. I didn’t know if I actually liked you or him.

“When I finally knew the truth, I saw how unbelievably wrong I was. Gavin was never anything more than an old fixation. You were my future.

“Jas, please come back! Just this once…”

She wept as she spoke, but I did not feel a thing.

Looking for someone else’s shadow in another person was just sickening. If I had known that from the start, I would have chosen to be alone forever rather than pick Audrey.

But I was not even given the chance to regret it when I was alive.

In the end, I got up from the table. I did not want to hear any more of her so-called confessions. I did not want to know her real reasons for falling for me back then. It all just made me sick.
