My Sister Reborn Took My Groom Chapter 13
The next time I saw Harrison, I was attending an exclusive gala.
Vance Holdings was at the peak of its momentum. Wherever I went, I was the absolute center of
attention.
Corporate partners and investors constantly approached me to talk and network, to the point where it became overwhelming.
With Aiden’s help, I finally managed to slip away from the crowd.
I walked out to the gardens for some fresh air.
That was when I saw Harrison.
He looked incredibly haggard. He had lost a significant amount of weight, and his eyes were heavily bloodshot, completely stripped of his former academic poise.
Not long after Harrison had been detained, the authorities in New York captured the mastermind,
Owen, and uncovered the entire truth.
Harrison wasn’t an active accomplice; he had simply been deeply embedded with Owen and
completely kept in the dark.
But even though he avoided criminal charges, Harrison was legally required to forfeit every cent of
his illegal earnings.
It was a staggering sum.
Harrison kept his freedom, but he lost absolutely everything else.
He was right back where he started before he ever moved to New York.
Those luxury days felt like a fever dream.
Actually, it was worse. Before moving to New York, he at least held a tenured position at the
university.
Harrison’s current reality was far bleaker.
The university would never take him back.
His family had plunged back into poverty, his father required ongoing medical care, and Harrison’s lingering arrogance made him completely unemployable.
Eventually, an old acquaintance of his father took pity on the family and offered Harrison his
current position as a hotel manager just to keep him afloat.
Now, Harrison stared at me blankly. “Shirley, you’re absolutely radiant. Then again, you’ve always
been brilliant…”
I knit my brows, scanning his uniform, and showed zero politeness. “Thanks for the compliment. Unlike you, Mr. Cole. You seem to be sinking lower by the day.”
Harrison didn’t seem to hear the insult, lost in his own thoughts. “You know, when the
matchmaker first came to our house with the proposal and showed me the photos of the two Vance daughters, I picked you at first sight.”
“Shirley, you probably don’t remember, but we met long before that. I saw you in the alley one afternoon feeding a stray cat. I never forgot that image…”
“So it should have been you who married me.”
He let out a bitter laugh, his eyes swimming with sudden emotion.
“Shirley, I had a dream once. In that dream, I married you. We built everything together, brick by brick. I became a billionaire, and you were my wife. We had children, lived a long, successful life, and everything went perfectly. So…”
I finally looked him in the eye, cutting him off calmly. “So, because that life was too smooth and perfect, you grew unsatisfied and wanted to try a different path. Right?”
In our past life, the moment we made it big, we brought our parents to live with us.
Later, seeing Yvonne struggling on her own, Harrison had suggested bringing her into our circle
and finding her a job.
I used to think he was just being kind to my family, but now it was clear they had been fooling
around behind my back the entire time.
Harrison’s pupils dilated, his eyes widening in shock. “Shirley, you also…”
My expression remained detached. “What a coincidence. I had the exact same dream. But unlike you, I find my current life a million times better than that dream.”
Behind me, Harrison’s face turned completely white.
He stood rooted to the spot, completely shell-shocked.
Devastated and lost in his own head, Harrison hadn’t even realized the final blow awaiting him.
Leaving his post during shift hours to harass a high-profile guest meant his employment was
effectively over.
He was about to be fired.
