My Childhood Friend Spoiled My Admission Dream Chapter 09
“Audrey, wait. I still need to talk to you.”Â
I had just walked out of the auditorium with my acceptance letter when Caleb chased after me.Â
There was still a slap mark on his face.Â
His uniform shirt was wrinkled from Victor grabbingÂ
him earlier.Â
For the first time in years, Caleb looked genuinelyÂ
pathetic.Â
I stopped walking. “Go ahead.”Â
He swallowed hard. “I was overwhelmed earlier. It’sÂ
not that I didn’t believe you, I just…”Â
“You just wanted to believe Vivian Hart more.”Â
His face turned pale instantly. “No. She was just too good at acting pitiful.”Â
“She kept talking about how she was the only hope forÂ
her hometown, how she couldn’t even afford food, how you’d had everything since birth.”Â
“So I thought… you giving up a little wouldn’t hurt.”Â
I looked at him quietly. “So I deserved it?”Â
“That’s not what I meant.” He sounded panicked.Â
“It’s just… I got used to it.”Â
“You were always calmer than me. Smarter than me.Â
Stronger than me.”Â
“You never looked like someone who neededÂ
protecting.”Â
“But Vivian was different. Every time she cried, I feltÂ
like she’d shatter if nobody helped her.”Â
I stared at him.Â
That excuse sounded unbelievably cheap.Â
“Caleb, I get hurt too.”Â
His eyes reddened immediately.Â
“I know.”Â
“Audrey, I really know now,”Â
“Please help me this one time.”Â
I almost laughed.Â
“Help you with what?”Â
He stepped closer anxiously.Â
“Go talk to Harvard’s admissions office for me. TellÂ
them I was a victim too. If they’re willing to reconsiderÂ
my application, or defer my admission for a year…”Â
I cut him off coldly. “Caleb, even now, the only personÂ
you care about is yourself.”Â
“I just want another chance.”Â
I looked straight into his eyes.Â
“When my life was almost destroyed by the two of you,Â
you told me to be understanding.”Â
“I can apologize.”Â
“I’ll explain everything in the group chat. I’ll tell everyone I was wrong.”Â
“When Vivian spread rumors that I changed myÂ
applications for some delinquent, why didn’t you verify anything first?”Â
His lips trembled. “Because I was jealous.”Â
“The second I heard her say you liked someone else, IÂ
lost it.”Â
“I thought you really didn’t want me anymore.”Â
I let out a cold laugh.Â
“And what exactly gave you the right to be angry?”Â
He suddenly fell silent.Â
There had always been something unspoken betweenÂ
Caleb and me.Â
Both our families treated it like a given, and even ourÂ
classmates acted like it was obvious.Â
But neither of us had ever said it out loud.Â
Then Vivian transferred in.Â
She’d stand beside Caleb’s desk holding a notebook full of wrong answers, calling his name in that soft littleÂ
voice.Â
Whenever I won academic competitions, she’d sighÂ
and say things like, “Audrey’s amazing. Unlike me, all IÂ
can do is work hard.”Â
Whenever Caleb brought me breakfast, she’d whisper,Â
“Rich people really do eat differently. I used to surviveÂ
on plain bread.”Â
And every single time, Caleb would frown at me.Â
“Audrey, stop making her uncomfortable.”Â
I used to explain myself, but he always said I wasÂ
overthinking.Â
The truth was, I hadn’t been overthinking anything. HeÂ
just liked being needed.Â
Caleb lowered his voice. “Audrey… we grew upÂ
together.”Â
“You can’t seriously watch me end up at a place likeÂ
that.”Â
I raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong with that kind ofÂ
school?”Â
He choked on his own words.Â
I smiled faintly.Â
“Didn’t you say going there would be a good lifeÂ
experience for me?”Â
“Now you get to experience it yourself. Sounds fair.”Â
His expression darkened. “Do you really have to be thisÂ
harsh?”Â
“You should’ve asked yourself that question lastÂ
night.”Â
At that moment, Victor walked over from behind us.Â
His tone was icy.Â
“Audrey, you don’t owe him anything.”Â
“What happened today was Caleb’s fault. I’ll make sureÂ
he publicly apologizes, and I’ll cooperate fully with theÂ
investigation into Vivian Hart.”Â
Caleb panicked instantly. “Dad, you can’t just abandonÂ
me.”Â
Victor finally looked at him directly. “I spent eighteenÂ
years protecting you.”Â
“And somehow I still raised someone who can’t tellÂ
right from wrong.Â
“From now on, deal with the consequences yourself.”Â
Caleb stood there blankly.Â
I turned to leave, but he suddenly grabbed my wrist.Â
“Audrey, don’t be this cruel.”Â
I shook him off immediately. “Caleb, the moment youÂ
hung up on me that night, we were already over.”Â
“But I regret it now.”Â
I looked at him one last time. “Your regret came tooÂ
late.”Â
“And it’s still all about you.‘
