My Childhood Friend Spoiled My Admission Dream Chapter 06
It wasn’t an Ivy League school acceptance letter, but aÂ
cheaply printed admission notice.Â
Right across the top, in huge letters, was the nameÂ
Riverstate Technical College.Â
And in the name field–Caleb Vaughn.Â
The entire auditorium went dead silent.Â
Then someone laughed. The laughter spread row byÂ
row across the room.Â
“Wait, wasn’t he talking about Ivy League?”Â
“Didn’t he just mock someone for ending up at an unaccredited college?”Â
“Honestly, Riverstate fits him. Major in running hisÂ
mouth.”Â
The color drained from Caleb’s face little by little.Â
He stared at the paper in his hand like he couldn’t recognize the words.Â
“No… this is wrong.”Â
“This can’t be real.”Â
He violently tore open the envelope and dumpedÂ
everything out.Â
Student registration forms. Orientation instructions.Â
Tuition payment slips.Â
Every single document had his name printed on it.Â
Caleb’s breathing turned ragged. Then he suddenlyÂ
looked up at me.Â
“It was you!”Â
He rushed to the edge of the stage and shouted into theÂ
microphone.Â
“You switched it! Audrey Sinclair, you were jealous ofÂ
me, so you brought a fake acceptance letter to ruinÂ
me!”Â
I stood up calmly and took the backup microphoneÂ
from a staff member nearby.Â
“Caleb, did you forget what Vivian Hart said?”Â
My voice wasn’t loud, but through the speakers, everyÂ
word echoed through the auditorium.Â
“She said she took the account information slip fromÂ
my backpack and changed my applications for me.”Â
Caleb’s expression twisted. “So what? That was yourÂ
account!”Â
“But I never kept my own student login info in my backpack.”Â
I looked directly at him.Â
“The only thing inside that day was the slip you gaveÂ
me when you asked me to help register your graduationÂ
contact information.”Â
“Your student ID number. The last six digits of yourÂ
Social Security number. Your login password.”Â
The crowd instantly erupted.Â
Caleb’s face went blank. Beside him, Vivian froze too.Â
“No… that’s impossible. I clearly-”Â
She cut herself off halfway through the sentence andÂ
clamped a hand over her mouth.Â
I looked at her. “You clearly thought it was mine,Â
right?”Â
Vivian stumbled backward. “No… I didn’t know. I reallyÂ
didn’t know.”Â
Caleb grabbed her shoulders hard. “Explain it clearly.”Â
“Whose account did you actually log into?!”Â
Tears streamed down Vivian’s face immediately.Â
“Caleb, I was nervous. The paper didn’t have a name onÂ
- it. I just thought if it was inside Audrey’s backpack, itÂ
had to belong to her.”Â
Caleb’s fingers started shaking. “No… no way.”Â
“The system must’ve messed up.”Â
He pulled out his phone and opened the official collegeÂ
admissions portal.Â
The projector was still connected to the auditorium screen, and the staff hadn’t cut the feed yet, so his login page appeared enlarged across the giant display.Â
Caleb entered the username and password.Â
Login successful.Â
The account activity log appeared on the screen.Â
His Early Decision application to Harvard UniversityÂ
had been withdrawn.Â
The only confirmed enrollment left was Riverstate Technical College.Â
The change had been made in the final minute before the application portal locked.Â
Login IP: an internet café near Vivian’s neighborhood.Â
The auditorium fell silent again.Â
This time, nobody laughed.Â
Every trace of color disappeared from Caleb’s face. HisÂ
lips trembled uncontrollably.Â
“This is wrong…”Â
“No… no, this can’t happen. I was supposed to get intoÂ
Harvard!”Â
His voice cracked sharply from panic. Then it hit him.Â
He jerked his head toward me. “Audrey… you knew thisÂ
the whole time?”Â
“I asked you before.” I met his gaze.calmly.Â
“If the applications that got tampered with belonged toÂ
you, would you still be this understanding?”Â
His lips moved, but no words came ouÈ›.Â
I unlocked my phone and played the voice messageÂ
from that night.Â
Caleb’s smug voice echoed throughout the auditorium.Â
[If I were the one whose applications were tamperedÂ
with today, I would never say a single harsh word toÂ
Vivian. She’s already had it hard enough. Unlike you,Â
not everyone only thinks about themselves.]Â
Someone in the audience gasped.Â
I looked straight at Caleb. “Now it’s your turn.”Â
“Caleb Vaughn… congratulations on getting exactly what you wanted.”
