My Best Friend Stole an Heir, So I Cleared House as the Lawful Wife Chapter 05
“You can’t throw him out of the Family over one tiny line. I suffered so much for the Morettis. You can’t throw me away now.”
Donna Serena had welcomed Vera with smiles only moments ago. Now she shoved her away with disgust.
“You cheap little fraud. I really thought you had some skill. We wasted half a day on you, and all you produced was a child who can’t even enter the inheritance list. You wasted my time and humiliated
the Moretti family.”
Vera turned to Camilla. Camilla stepped back as if Vera might stain her by touching her, then
retreated to my side. When she saw me frown, she put on a flattering smile.
“Olivia, look at how messy this became. The baby you’re carrying wasn’t hurt, right?”
I stepped back and avoided the hand she reached toward my belly. Camilla’s smile stiffened. She
withdrew her hand.
“Right. Of course. This is what Don Vito’s will actually depends on. We can’t touch it carelessly.”
Donna Serena finally reacted too. She rushed to my side, her eyes bright again.
“Yes. Yes. The baby in your belly is the Moretti family’s only hope. You have to take good care of yourself. Don’t wear yourself out. From now on, the entire compound revolves around you.”
Nicholas turned and slapped Vera across the face.
“You filthy little schemer. You plotted against my son while his rightful Donna was pregnant, and you tried to frame my real grandchild. One slap is light punishment. Pack your things and take that child out of my compound before I have the soldiers do it for you.”
Vera covered her face and cried with that fragile, practiced softness she always used when she
wanted sympathy. Even now, she did not forget to play the saint.
“So what if he can’t inherit? He’s still Damian’s biological child. I only wanted to give this child a
home. What did I do wrong? Olivia, you’re already Damian’s wife. You already have the title. Why can’t you tolerate one poor child?”
I was about to curse her out when a low voice came from outside the chapel.
“Funny. I leave for three months, and suddenly I have a son I know nothing about?”
The sound of that familiar voice made my eyes burn. Damian Moretti stood against the light at the chapel entrance. His black shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were streaked with red. He looked like
he had not slept in days. One glance told me he had come straight from a long flight and Family business. He walked to my side. The scent of him steadied the shaking thing in my chest.
“I’m home, sweetheart.”
With a sob in my voice, I hit his chest. For a moment, there was so much pain inside me that I did
not know where to begin.
“Do you know they nearly killed me and the baby over Don Vito’s estate?”
Damian bent down and pulled me into his arms.
“The moment I received your encrypted letter, I came back,” he said, his voice low with apology. “But flying from Sicily to New York took several transfers. I was delayed for a few days.”
He looked at me steadily, warmth softening his eyes.
“Don’t worry. I’ve already submitted a request to the Commission to transfer back to New York headquarters. From now on, I stay by you and the children. I will never let you face these bloodsuckers hiding behind the Family name alone again.”
Then he straightened. His gaze landed on Vera, cold enough to cut skin.
“Now explain how this child came into existence.”
