I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 06

Ethan hurried to explain himself.

“Clara, I genuinely didn’t know about any of this. I never told you that you couldn’t have money. Veronica said you were doing inappropriate work outside the house, and that’s why I told you not to go. But I doubled the amount of money I was giving you.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

So all this time, none of my actual needs had ever reached Ethan.

He frantically unlocked his phone, pulled up his financial records, and handed it to me.

Every month, $3 million had been transferred out of his account.

Every single dollar had gone to the same corporate account.

For an entire year.

Not one payment had been missed.

The most recent transfer had been made last night. It was for $500,000, with the note:

[For Clara to spend however she wants.]

I stared at the enormous difference between the financial records on his phone and mine, struggling to catch my breath.

So that was the truth.

Everything I had suffered through over the past year had been built on a lie.

Ethan took my trembling hand.

“I’ll make this right. I promise.”

His face darkened as he quickly called Veronica.

“Come to St. Jude Metropolitan Hospital.”

Not long afterward, Veronica walked into the hospital room in the latest pair of Jimmy Choo heels.

Ethan placed the transaction records in front of her.

“I transferred three million dollars to you every month. So why did Clara only receive five

hundred?”

Aflicker of guilt crossed Veronica’s eyes, but she quickly composed herself.

“Mr. Hayes, I think there may have been a misunderstanding. The $500 Ms. Miller received was simply her emergency spending money. Her clothing, jewelry, handbags, meals, transportation, and everything else were all paid for through the corporate account you established for her.”

She pulled up what she claimed was my complete spending history.

Every month’s expenses were laid out in meticulous detail.

Luxury handbags: $450,000.

Designer gowns and high-fashion clothing: $1.1 million.

Private clubs and nightclubs: $500,000.

Luxury medical treatments and cosmetic procedures: $900,000.

And so on.

Every transaction had been paid through that corporate account.

Every charge was labeled:

[Clara Miller Living Expenses.]

Veronica’s voice was confident and perfectly controlled.

“Mr. Hayes, Ms. Miller’s expenses were substantial. Every single one of these expenditures was

reported to you in advance.”

She gave me a disdainful glance before turning back to Ethan.

“I’ve worked tirelessly for Hayes Group for years. I’ve always done my job properly, and now Ms. Miller has come here and accused me of things I never did. I don’t think it’s fair for me to be treated this way. I hope you’ll give me an explanation.”

Ethan took the phone and stared at the charges.

His eyes stopped on the private club and nightclub expenses.

My chest tightened.

Apparently, Carter’s wild accusation that I had been keeping another man on the side had stuck

with Ethan after all.

Ethan opened the transaction and turned the screen toward Veronica.

“What is this charge?”

Veronica glanced at it and immediately put on an aggrieved expression.

“Ms. Miller claimed she was pregnant that day and said she needed money for medical expenses She came to the company several times asking for money, and I told you about it. Jeventually transferred the money because I didn’t know what else to do. I had no idea she would spend it at an upscale nightclub.”

Her explanation was deliberately vague.

She was clearly trying to make it sound as though everything had been

my fault.

But that had been the exact day I went to the hospital for my pregnancy test.

The baby growing inside me now was proof enough.

Ethan’s expression turned cold.

“So Clara used her pregnancy as an excuse to ask you for more than a million dollars?”

He paused.

“And what about the $500,000 transferred last night? Did she spend that too?”

Veronica hesitated for the briefest moment before answering in the same calm voice.

“Yes, Mr. Hayes.”

Ethan looked back at me.

I knew him well enough to see it.

He had already figured out most of what was happening.

I pulled up every transaction on my own phone and held it out to Veronica.

“Ms. Thorne, you said my monthly spending was excessive. So tell me, how exactly did you know

what I was spending money on?”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“Did you personally see me going to nightclubs? Or did you see me shopping for handbags and

clothes?”
