I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 05
I confronted him. “You said I was your only wife. So who exactly was the three million dollars a month supposed to be for?”
Ethan knew he was in the wrong. He edged closer to me and said, “I swear, Clara. There was never another woman.”
Carter held up three fingers in agreement. “Clara, I can vouch for Ethan. He might look like a playboy, but when it came to other women, he barely even looked twice.”
A sharp cramp twisted through my lower abdomen. I had no energy left to argue. I sank onto the corner of the couch.
The moment Ethan saw how pale I had become, panic flashed across his face. He slipped an arm around me, lifted me effortlessly into his arms, and rushed me to the hospital.
The doctor examined me carefully while Ethan stood beside the bed, staring at her anxiously.
“What’s wrong with her? What’s making her sick?”
The doctor frowned. “She’s pregnant and still trying to starve herself? Does she not want the baby, or does she just have a death wish?”
“What?”
Ethan’s shocked voice cut her off. He stared at me, and something in his expression changed. The doctor looked between the two of us, as if she had finally put the pieces together.
“She’s been severely malnourished for quite some time. If she wants to carry the pregnancy to term, she needs to start getting adequate nutrition immediately. And she absolutely cannot overexert herself or put herself under unnecessary emotional stress.”
After the doctor left, Ethan dropped to one knee beside my hospital bed.
“Clara, you’re really pregnant.” His voice trembled. “Veronica told me you were only pretending to be pregnant because you wanted money, I didn’t know, I swear, I didn’t know.”
I leaned weakly against the headboard.
“So you believed everything Veronica told you?”
“No. That’s not what happened.” He hurried to explain himself. “You really had been asking me for
money constantly those few days, and I was already angry. I should have looked into it myself, but I
didn’t.”
bitter laugh escaped me.
After everything I had endured these past months, all the hunger, exhaustion, and humiliation, his explanation was simply that he had failed to investigate.
“So you never bothered to find out why I needed money, either?”
I pulled up the transfer history on my phone and handed it to him.
Ethan took the phone and slowly scrolled through the records.
Every month, exactly $500 had been deposited into my account.
For the first two months, it had been only $400. The transaction notes read:
[Passed out from low blood sugar. Deducting the $100 advanced payment.]
There was also the $15,000 I had gotten from selling one of my handbags. That same night, Veronica had transferred $15,097 out of my account.
She had even taken every dollar of the money Nora had lent me.
With every transaction he scrolled past, Ethan’s face grew paler.
I watched him and calmly laid out what my life had looked like these past few months.
“When I ran out of money, I wanted to get a job. You wouldn’t let me. So I asked you for money, and Veronica told you I was reckless with my spending and needed to cut back.”
“I was so hungry I could barely think straight, so I took a job at a coffee shop. Veronica told you I was working for cash under the table and making Hayes Group look bad. So you bought the entire coffee shop just to humiliate me.”
“Two weeks ago, I found out I was pregnant. I went to Hayes Group because I needed money for prenatal care and to protect the baby. Veronica stopped me again. She told you I was faking the
pregnancy just to get money from you, that I was treating you like an ATM.”
I paused, my fingers curling tightly into the bedsheet.
“So I stopped asking you for money, I took a part-time job at a bar because I needed to save enough
for an abortion.”
The moment Ethan heard the word abortion, his head snapped up.
